Anyone know a good place that sells Kanji scrolls?

Postby Mr. Hai » Wed May 21, 2003 8:55 am

Ya know, those calligraphic sheets of Kanji that make such great room decorations.

I've done a bunch of Google searches but all I find are art class websites and articles in magazines and newspapers - no retailers.

Where's a good place to order some from? Any that are U.S.-based (since that's where I am)?

Here's what to do.

Image Go down Shinjuku Station. Go over to the main NE exit to Studio Alta on Friday or Saturday Follow the subterranean passages, on the multiple levels to find a poetess to write a Tanka scroll on the spot. You can still buy a station poetess for about $40 a box on a slow night.

Ok, ok, seriously, there really are few starving poets who offer to write on commission even at Shinjuku station. Some are even cute. And shodo is so rife in Japan that there ought to be dumpsters full of it somewhere.

I dunno as far as size goes... bigger the better. Preferrably more of the rectangular kind as opposed to the narrow, floor-to-ceiling kind, but anything would be awesome.

Oh Absolutely. All good art is judged by its size.

Do 'em big and square has been the artist's creed since the renaissance. Cover the walls nicely. :D

I don't know much about art but I know square yardage when I see it

Man, I still haven't been able to find decent-sized ones anywhere. There's some hanging in the student center @ the community college I'll be leaving in 5 days, but they won't sell them to me and I'm not going to convert to a life of crime just for wall decorations...

I know this thread is a bit old.. but

Takase Studios seem to sell good caligraphy.. of course it is not antique but they seem to have a good site.

Isn't that the way it is? Whenever you want something inTokyo ---something you've seen a few times before---ya can't find it. Then 3 months later...BANG it's staring in your face. An old FG friend (he's been in Tokyo more the 45 years) asked me to get him some Wheat Germ. I said sure--see iit all the time at Kinokuniya. Hmmmm, it took me week of scrounging to find it. :?
