Thanks for the link to that thread. Nice to see the Japanese debating the usage of the word among themselves. Of course, we talk about that all the time in this forum, but the conclusion is usually "Gaijin itself is not a discriminatory word, it's the way it is used." Then some people get criticized for being too thin-skinned, others claim that they should be referred to by their nationality, etc.
The Japanese seem to cover all the angles in that thread, though. Pretty cool, except for that joker who thinks foreigners stink. He/she obviously hasn't sat next to a salaryman on the train who hasn't bathed or brushed his teeth in the last 24 hours.
