Gaijin vs Gaijin

Postby yanpa » Fri Mar 01, 2013 9:07 am

I know it's from that bastion of high journalism, Metropolis, but still contains the odd grain of truth
Gaijin vs. Gaijin
The battle for foreign expat supremacy

There’s a Little Britain character whose catchphrase is: “I’m the only gay in the village.” In the same way, every gaikokujin would like to say “I’m the only foreigner in Tokyo.”

This might sound reasonable since foreigners who move to Japan are probably not necessarily doing it to be surrounded by their peers, but this feeling can go to ridiculous extremes. At times I’ve been with a group of foreigners outside a bar, only for someone to say, “Better not go in that one—it’s filled with expats.”

...

You only have to surf internet forums to see the extreme level to which this self-righteous “I’m a real Japan resident” attitude goes. Some poor guy asks about an English-teaching job and is treated as a loser who can’t make it in his home country. But these posts are projections of the commenters’ insecurity rather than attempts at genuine advice.

...

It’s easier to feel superior by looking down on others than it is to admit that your career is going nowhere, or that a large part of the society you live in won’t ever truly accept you. It’s hard for a “dinosaur” to recognize that from the moment of setting foot on Japanese soil the newbie isn’t so far away from him or her, in terms of social status.

...battle continues...

I loathe having to deal with the "gaijin nod"

Am I the only one that thinks it's nice when someone does this? I'd much rather get a smile or not that the look of "what are you doing in my Japan."

Mostly yes, but during my last trip to the consulate I had to cross the way of an expat who seems offended that I didn't jump on her lap yapping like a poodle when she told me "bonjour" out of the blue in street near the entrance... Ok, she was fuckable(*) so I mumbled hello back after she gave me the high and mighty "you're not even polite face" instead of just throwing her stones like I usually do...
But I don't see much more reason to speak to frog hippies here rather than anywhere else...

I mean...

"hey you'r French"
"mee too"
"hey you'r in Japan"
"mee too"

Then what... I can't directly ask them for their political affiliation(**)...

(*) like in, really fuckable, not like in "have a vagina, somewhere"
(**) and don't get me started on the Renault people versus Peugeot people catfights...

I cycle a fair bit. I always have a nod or a greeting to other cyclists who cross my path. Much like the "gaijin nod" it's a 50/50 take up rate. Seems to be the friendliest guys are the keirin guys always a smile and a greeting as they pass me. Uphill. Single speed. Not a drop of sweat. Bastards.

I've noticed the same thing from cyclists when I'm on my real bike and wearing cycling gear. It never happens when I'm on my mamachari coming back from the grocery store.

Unfortunately my good bike has been broken for almost a year so it's been awhile since I did any real cycling.

This is kinda an odd topic for me. I don't wake up every morning and say, "I live in Japan and aren't I living an unusual life!!" I don't really think about being a gaijin, living as a minority in a foreign country as I have lived here for so long, it doesn't feel so "foreign" anymore. I chat to the other mothers when we drop our kids off at day care, I ride my silly little mamachari and nod to other mums riding their kids around, I pretty much mind my own business and don't really look out for ways to "show off" that I am a minority, I just live here.

I agree with Coligny on this as I live in my house and that happens to be in Japan.

Sure, when issues come up, I like to discuss them and think about them from all perspectives but I really make an effort not to think in a "them vs us" or an "us vs us" way. I gave up trying to fight every fight a long time ago much to my own sanity. There are fights that are worth fighting but I guess I just let other "injustices" just slide rather than pissing into the wind.

I am just back from a long weekend in Seoul and it really struck me how normal I feel my life is in Japan these days and that my Japanese skills aren't as bad as I thought they were. I managed to communicate more in Japanese than in English which is a trip for the person you are talking to.

When you are in a country where you cannot read or speak a word it does put quite a lot of things into perspective. I felt like I was in a foreign country then. The last few trips I have been to have been to English speaking countries or Thailand but in a total touristy bubble so the language really wasn't an issue. But this last trip to Seoul was very different - lots of fun but really different.

Very much agree with these sentiments.

BTW, if you speak Japanese in South-Korea to older people, they usually understand...

So what's that squiggly script on the sign between the French flag and the Japanese text? Nabatean?

Gomigirl, I visited Seoul, last August, and had the same experience as you. First I ended up communicating in Japanese much more than in English, especially with street vendors. They didn't bat an eye that some white guy was haggling with them in Japanese, so it must be more normal than i thought. My last few trips have either been to Canada, or the US, so no worries about using English, until I ventured into Quebec, but that is another story(fuck you PQ), but I really felt how difficult it was to be in a country with very little English signage or speakers. And upon returning to Japan, felt right back at home. And a word of advice, when you go back to visit your parents or family, and it is time to leave, don't say you are going home, or your Mom or Dad will be severely hurt! Even though this coming May will be my 20th anniversary of coming to Japan, they can't fathom that this is now my home.

Same here...but there are plenty that neither language worked with so the whole point and grunt method becomes defacto and then you start to think about what GG was saying, it doesn't feel foreign like that to live in J-land anymore. Only when conflict arises.

It would be sooooooooo out of character for Australians to sell valuable mineral resources to China...

I don't really like the gaijin nod, not because I feel superior or "how dare another gaijin be in my japan" but simply because if we were back home I probably wouldn't cross the street to piss on them if their hair was on fire and face down in a gutter. BUT because were in japan together we supposed to bros.

My first 7-8 years here, I really didn't have any gaijin friends. The ones I did hang out with would all leave after 2-3 years, and something just ain't quite the same "Liking" a photo of them eating at "Kamikaze Sushi" in Anyplace, Western Country. Now, I've got some other gaijin friends )probably also lifers) that can talk the usual "Merikuh BS that means nothing and means everything (something that most Japanese really can't do quite right), so things are more balanced. Got over the "only gaijin in the room" thing, although I do hesitate when attempting to nanpa a gaijin girl, as I worry that she might not speak either E or J.
