For what it's worth, I went 10+ years without a damn preliterate hanko. Finally, I had to get one for a condo loan application. I haven't used it in years. I just smile and say, "How could a gaijin have a kanji hanko, that kind's a silly isn't it?" All the Japanese I run into just suck air for a moment and agree to let me "sign".
