I got pulled over riding my wifes bicycle yesterday....they asked for my seal.....then they played 20 questions with me

"where are you staying?"
"why are you out so late?"
"how long have you been married?"
"do you have your passport?"

etc........

INSTANT CHECKPOINTS IN JAPAN
EXTRANATIONALITY AS SUFFICIENT GROUNDS FOR CRIMINAL SUSPICION
In other words: The Japanese Police are wilfully targeting foreigners for spot identity checks.

Yikes Dr. AssKissinger!! I thought I was the ONLY gaijin in the history of Japan who has NEVER (20 yrs) pulled over for the great Bicycle Inquistion. For some strange reason, the J-cops never feel they need to question me. Go figure. Image

Bicycles are the ultimate common good in Japan.

I've "liberated" more than one bike in my time after mine was stolen. Sometimes you gotta' love socialism (Japan is socialist, by the way, in case anyone has delusions that this is a capitalist country).

I've never got been stopped while riding a bicycle either. Then again, I've never seen that many police to stop me, not on foot anyway.

Did get pulled up for a breath test once, but that was cool - they were just pulling over anyone who drove past. Lucky I wasn't drinking, those new fines are pretty stiff. About 300,000 yen or something? 8O Certainly gave me pause to think. I never touch the stuff if I have to drive, even if it's just down the road. Don't want to fork over that much, certainly not just because I had a drink or two.

Once I set off the alarm in our building (it's silent, so I didn't know until 6 cops showed up). Fortunately I had my wife there in case things got ugly, but all I had to do was show hand them some business cards, and they went away quietly.

Me either....this was the first time it has ever happened to me.....also it wasnt on foot.

It was like 11pm, I was comming home from a local bar about 5 blocks from the house.....the cop car drove right up on the sidewalk and I had to slam on my brakes or slam into the side of the police car....and two guys just jumped out of the car like a swat team. I was scared shitless for about 30 seconds cause I thought I was going to jail.
