OK, then your year would have 1 million new-style seconds, while a conventional year has 31,536,000 old-style seconds. In other words, 1 new-style second would be the equivalent of almost 32 old-style seconds. In that case it would be convenient to count time in terms of deciseconds (ds), with 1 old-style second being approximately equivalent to 3 ds.

Hmm, we wouldn't have to follow astronomical figures any longer. Where the sun is and what it does is specialist knowledge that only farmers and photogrphers etc need. A typical salariman, banker or english teacher doesn't need to go to sleep / rise with the chickens.

So we could arbitrarily decide, how long 1 second is. Maybe we cut a slice of the most beautiful quartz we can find, consider it "the definite time thing" and then 1 million of its oscillations is 1 new second. Just a thought.

Cooking books would have to be rewritten, though, for the time in the oven etc.

Holy crap, looks like I made a mistake. One decisecond is actually about 3.2 old-style seconds. It is a centisecond (cs) I was talking about when I meant 0.32 old-style seconds.

But I'm starting to like the idea of a centisecond.

It will certainly be easier this time, and if there is going to be a new Emperor's birthday holiday the printed calendars will be able to include it in advance (23 February, if you want to plan your skiing holiday ahead of time).
