I've learned a lot on F-G and if I want to get some serious answers I'd always ask here first.

Before this I tried to ask questions and contibute on the usenet group fj.life.in.japan but what a bunch of arrogant assholes, just about every answer was a sarcastic putdown or factually incorrect. Later I found out it's sort of well known for being a hang out for primetime losers.

That was neither grotesque nor inane.. it was a true story taken from a news site. :D Some my conclude that indeed a man cutting of his own penis and tongue is disgusting, I grant you that. But the point was the special tea he was drinking.. I posted it as a kind of public service announcement.. :D

So keep on posting interesting questions- the news section is a great place to start. Maybe there will even be female posters someday.

Maybe he meant new or more female posters?

I think everybody knows the two gomis are female.

When I first found this board I was afraid to post because the posts were so witty and smart. But it was new and everyone was full of stuff to say. But now it's more relaxed.

first off, no, I don't think there's too much sex talk here. compared to other gaijin in japan sites, this one is pretty conservative. Which brings me to...

It's strikes me as odd, considering the name of this website, how conservative some of the members are.

I agree. While I will admit to jumping into the fray when I hear racially charged stuff, other than that, I'm a pretty fucking wild person and came here (especially based on the name) expecting a more loose attitude. instead, for a while at least, it seemed that every time someone made an opinionated comment, one of 2-3 posters <names deleted> made it their job to flame them into dust. the kid from Oregon, in my opinion was just a bump in the road compared to the other flame war guys. and I think that's where the problem with getting more women/diversity of opinions and posts stems from. I lurked on these boards for a loooong time before I posted because I saw so many flame wars. I would forget about the site and come back. finally, when it seemed like things had calmed down, I started posting. but then flames started again (not talking about my jousts  ) so I got bored with it and left. Basically, I think any site where flame wars are alllowed to rage on too long suffer. good people leave, or potential posters look at the way things are handled and decide not to post at all.

I should mention that I've participated in sites related to japan like this where the average poster was on average less accomplished in their professional occupations, and younger than this crowd, and somehow the flames never got as bad as I saw them get here at one point. I do remember a time when GG (a great poster) used to post A LOT more, and while I know she has been busy of late, I suspect the flame wars were a factor in her less frequent posts.

in my opinion, I love the way the site is right now. people disagree sometimes, and take a few jabs, but I haven't really seen raging flames here. I don't agree with everyone here, and I know not everyone here agrees with me, but we are not foaming at the mouth posting war cries to each other. this is good. I hope it lasts.

Jim: All good points. While there are some conservative members, I think this board definitely leans toward the liberal (as I think most FG in Japan do).

Also, a number of moderators have been appointed to prevent flame wars from extending into infinity. You will notice that there hasn't been a flame war since the emergence of moderators.

I consider myself a moderate liberal in the conservative sort of way.
