Photography In Japan

Postby John Dillinger » Thu Jan 23, 2020 11:50 am

(Wasn't quite sure to put this. Taro, move if you feel it necessary)
So I've got a couple of questions for you guys in regard to photography.

First, what are the restrictions on photography in Japan?( I'd heard that Kyoto had banned photography on certain streets because some tourists were being obnoxious and were harassing the geiko and maiko for pictures.)Where are some places in Tokyo that photography is restricted or outright forbidden? I want to get a lot of photos, but I don't want to bother anyone either.

Second, what are some good places FG's can recommend for photography besides all the touristy stuff like Tokyo Tower, etc?

Under-skirt photography is forbidden in Japan.

But that speaks for itself.

I hope so.

Kyoto is a very unusual situation. They're trying to stop people from harassing the geisha.

In general there aren't photographic restrictions here (well, you'll see no photo signs in stores and the like) and nobody's really going to care about a tourist taking pictures. Drone flights are restricted in urban areas, so check the maps closely for where you can fly.

It's a little hard to give you a general recommendation for places to photograph. I'd say get off the main tourist path and explore what the Tokyo area has to offer. There are lots of neighborhoods like Koenji with an old Japan-style vibe. Go to a bar and try to make some friends : )
