Although he absolutely did not know any Japanese (except for 2 or 3 words), the locals would typically treat him as one of their own, until he opened his mouth.

That said, I enjoy Alecia's comments, especially the technical computer jive - its a turn on - no kidding. I wish she would post more often.

Although he absolutely did not know any Japanese (except for 2 or 3 words), the locals would typically treat him as one of their own, until he opened his mouth. Especially when he was by himself. (Yes, I know that they are some uniquely Japanese facial features, such as the long flat faces, but a large significant percentage of local Japanese do not have those features and look more like the Han Chinese.) Chinese and Korean physical features are close enough to many local Japanese, that they can easily blend in. Something that those of us of European decent can not.

My family didn't know my immigrant German grandmother was Jewish till I was in my 30's and she had been in the ground for more than a decade. A lot of crazy shit can go down during war and some people find it easier to just pretend it didn't happen and go on with life.
