Another College wannabie

Postby nonsushi » Thu Apr 15, 2004 7:34 pm

Hi all

I'm considering taking a dual honours Chemistry degree here in the UK that consists of about 1/3 Japanese, 2/3 Chemistry, including technical "Japanese for chemists". They do a year exchange with Okayama university with a high chance of a scholarship for that year.

I've been reading through similar threads and was wondering if it would be better to follow a route that would make me more employable when I graduate (such as industrial experience). I could then try and learn Japanese in my spare time in the chance that I can get there by myself at some point.

Thanks

As a person with a chemistry degree I would defintely say get some industrial experience.. but then I chose a non-acedemic path. Your first job out of university is a HUGE shock to the system.

But if you see yourself in acedemia.. well it is completely up to you.

But one must ask about the interest in Japanese? I did it but it is an unusual combination. I carried through my Japanese from High School.

BTW I have zero vocab in Japanese for Biotech and Chemical terms.. but I have long since left the lab.

The thing is that I really don't know what I'd *like* to end up doing, so I can't really say...

I got interested in Japan and Japanese a couple years ago and I've been doing a one year basic course 3 times a week.
I'm enjoying it but it's probably no comparison to what university courses will be like, I'm guessing. It's really just tourist phrases, simple grammar and that. I know a few kanji and all the kana.
I guess it's a start though. :)
