Well gee golly wally.. you're not in Gaza any more Dorthy. Oh aunty emm.. aunty emm.. "There's no place like home, there's no place like home... :D"

I think any religion that denies one a full range of experiences.. like beef, chicken, and pork, is well, not good.
:D

LMAO... Also any one that violates the non-alcohol policy is marked straight off my list...

Let me see that leaves.. well ummm, Native American spiritualism maybe?
:D

I wonder if he'd be as knowledgable about say Jainism practices of an Indian visiting his home as Japanese were of him visiting?

I think this kid is suffering from Jewjincentrism.. :D

Quick, get Bill Keller on the phone! We have another idiot that can write codswallop for the New York Times!

"... and then... :: sniff :: the Japanese host family actually expected me to do the song-and-dance-I'm-your-Gaijin-eigobuddy routine!"

Maybe he should have worked "Natto isn't Kosher!" in there, I'd feel a little more compassionate. ;)

That's a really funny article given the intense "standoffishness" of Jewish people. This guy is so self-centered he only thought about himself, "I told her it was a festival and left it at that." If its a festival you would drink more beer then usual right?

There were no books? No Internet pages in Japanese, no Buddhist priest who could explain Judaism in Japanese? You didn't find a way to explain yourself and then bitched because no one understood?

From the American Heritage Dictionary...

Yes, indeed, the intense standoffish of Jewish people is something we can all safely agree on and assume as a starting point for this discussion.

Let's make another fun example with "given"!

Given the direction this thread has just turned, it will be a wonder if it doesn't get moved to Beyond F*cked.

Ditto. I'm appalled at the viciousness or even blatant anti-Semitism of the comments above. WTF is everyone's problem? The guy was not criticizing Japan. He was discussing how it was difficult to practice his own faith in Japan, a problem that people of other faiths probably also experience.

Furthermore, the "called it a spring festival and left it at that" comment was a mere byproduct of language difficulties. How do you explain a complex religious custom if you don't have the tools in Japanese to do so?

Andocrates, stop talking out your ass and get educated.
