Touching Down Soon

Postby aquamarine » Wed Jun 23, 2004 5:24 pm

Coming soon to a suburb near you..... ME!

Well only 14 days till I touch down at Nerita airport. Before I go I request one thing from the seasoned veterans...

WHAT NESSESITIES SHOULD I BRING??? I've already heard deoderant... I also understand that condoms in generic "North American" size (7"+) are a wee hard to come by. Now, what are some creature comforts that could be brought over? All I'm brining as of now is $12,000 in cash, a laptop, a MD player, a backpack, camera and clothing.

Finally, what, if anything, can I bring for YOU folks? Rolaids? Candy-Bars? Canadian/American shampo/condoms/deoderant/DVD's? I have no qualms about running out to the stores and picking up anything you folks need as long as it's not being paid for out of my pocket, I'll just bring it over for you!

Sure. The games are real goony but the price is right.

Can't promise a red carpet and motorcade reception at Narita for your arrival, but definitely let people know when you surface and a few of us can get together for a quiet gingerale to welcome you..

Necessities.. make sure you bring some of your fave food from home - if you can cook that is.. packet sauces, salad dressings, salsas etc are sometimes familiar and friendly to the eye and the tummy when the first pangs of "what the fuck have I done" set in. Comfort food.

mmm Reece's.... mmm Ghiradelli.... and I am not even American..

Hamburger Helper Beef Stroganoff

I don't think it's available anywhere in Japan. It offends my white trash senses to go without it.

PS

What do you call a heard of masturbating cattle?

Beef Stroganoff

All I'm brining as of now is $12,000 in cash

That's a lot of bread dude. You can get yourself rolling with a lot less than that. You do mean T/C, no?

Well I've started off with T/C ($2500 worth) and the rest is in Canadian funds as of today, however I am considereing converting $1000 into yen and the rest into TC's.

Again though, did you folks need anything from "The America's"? Specifically my city of Saskatoon (http://www.pozland.com/gallery/landscape/pages/Sunset2.html) ?

Whoa. Why is it everybody I seem to be meeting from Canada over the past year or so is from Saskatoon? Is everybody there that eager to leave? (Though, to be fair, one friend did go back for a teaching gig at U.S.)

If the pic in your avatar is of you, you wont be needing any condoms here.
The only thing i cant find here, is Greek Yogurt, thats the only thing, i even found some Haribo starmix the other day.
Well friendly open conversation with the locals would be nice, but ive given up on that.
Every book i read about Japan said bring this, bring that.
God knows why, must be a lot of young republicans writing these books.

At least one spare pair of sunglasses you like.

A money belt of some sort. Hidden pocket belt, boots with an inside pocket, ankle-wrap pocket...something! And a spare set of ID's and extra junk wallet. And photocopy your passport before leaving the airport when you land (this can help I have heard in getting it replaced if you lose it somehow)

Toothpaste! (although this may not make it through customs in some places)

A spare pair of shoes. Odor-eaters (I dunno if you can get those over there is why I mention it)

(if you don;t have it already, pick up a deck of cards)

Advice: Have fun, but get the majority of your cash changed into traveler's checks of some kind. And keep them hidden about your person.

You may not get mugged in Japan (though it could happen) but it is a possibility. Better to get some new habits in a relatively safe place like Japan instead of trying to learn and forgetting something at the crucial moment in another country.

Good luck and have a blast!

Jushin, that was a tad hardcore eh? No condoms for him due to his picture???

I think the less trendy you are back in your home country the more the girlies dig you here... Don't ask me why.

As for items to bring, I'd put some Taco Bell in your carry on.. mountain dew if you drink the shit, some good soap, Japanese soap sucks the cows teets..

aqua, don't listen to him. You'll be up to your neck in females (if that's something you want).

Good stuff folks. I'll be sure to bring over some Canadian souveniers to give to any of the natives that I need (unless they have something against Canucks). Somewhere on this forum I do beleive I recall a quote... "Bring a bottle of Maple Syrup and live like a king for a week".... someone care to explain that one to me?

Just do yourself (and everybody else) a favor and do not sew a Canadian flag on every hat, backpack, jacket and pair of underwear you bring with you.

The only thing more obnoxious than expats who start every conversation with a new person with "where are you from?" are the ones who feel a need to broadcast that information.

Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

Just arrive with an open mind and a little patience and you'll have a great time. Enjoy.

Maple Syrup is more expensive than cocaine here, so maybe you can trade some and "be somebody".
