so bite the bullet, I am and will start again this week.

Good for you man. It will only improve your quality of life.

does Japanreally need three writing styles. The sounds are the same after all, and with regards to kanji, couldn`t the word be written in Hiragana and the context of the sentence tell what meaning it has.

Reading Japanese that is all in hiragana is really difficult. The only way I can think to compare it to English is to imagine reading a sentence with no spaces. Thats the thing about kanji and hiragana etc - it helps you tell where one word ends and another begins. Also, while you could generally tell the meaning of a word from context, there are times you might not be able to. And you dont need the context if you have the kanji.

Cheers Hakuman, I`ll try and take that on board as I grapple with the complexities of things. I know kanji is important, but there`s a little part of me that fails to see the logic in it.
First things first. And that is to feel like I am making a worrthwhile contrbution to a conversation and then tackle the kanji. So gambarre, for me, anyway.
Fuck, gotta love summer ( that is if you are not in Niigata). Bring on the waves and chill the beer, for that is life.
