The walls you speak of are merely an extension of human failings. I enjoy your metaphor, but what about the walls that shelter a family from the cold, or the walls of a museum? It would be nice to get rid of every wall which was built with malicious intent, but if we are going to imagine miracles why not go one step further and simply wish away the very essence of human weakness. The justification of a wall is dictated solely by it's creator's intent. I just think it would be more efficient to dream of ill-intent vanishing from the earth rather than walls, which serve a multitude of purposes, mostly good.

And while we're on the subject of pastries, why is it that a predominately rice-eating culture has better bakeries than a place like California which is full of bread-eaters? I don't understand it, all Californian's eat are danishes, cake, and donuts. Where's the deep-fried curry pan?

If it had hash in it I would forget about any morals!
what about a new topic on cultural treasures. We should present the Japanese with the idea to refine their delicious cakes!

cause it's exotic and tasty. what about exotic and tasty stuff in California. Is there any? If not, Japan wins for it's extraordinary taste and egoism!

what about Californian pastries- danish and so on. Well, fudge is all american! I think Japanese are very good at adapting and making it their style. Mostly Japanese think it's their own culture. Before christmas I was humming Rudolph the red nose reindeer next to a friend. He said 'You know this song? It's Japanese!' and began singing it in Japanese! I appreciate that! It sounded funny. I would prefer German bread to Japanese and American bread ( I once bought pretzels at a 49ers game and thought great! real pretzels! They looked perfect and tasted like cardboard)
But when they copy bad food it's really so disgusting. I like American Burger, I like Subways and I hate sandowichi!
As to Baumkuchen, it's German and it's too expensive in Germany. But here you get it everywhere. I wouldn't say it's one of the good cakes of my culture but I never before ate that much Baumkuchen. In Highschool I was jobbing at a bakery and I wondered why all those Japanese travel groups are crazy for Baumkuchen. I got the answer when I shipwrecked here. They sell it everywhere and the Japanese buy what they know. :P

On the topic of Japanese ownership; Microsoft, fireworks, and HAWAII have all been items claimed as Japanese by a handful of my Nihonjin acquaintances. 8O

[quote="Adhesive"]On the topic of Japanese ownership]

we shouldn't be too hard with them. It doesn't really matter who invented it, right, it solves the purpose of human wealth and comfort and I hope that it will go on growing until the third world can get something of the delicious cake
