Also, how is the crime in Tokyo? I'll be travelling around with my digicam and notebook mostly. I suppose I can leave the notebook back at the Ryokan i'll be staying at, but will definitely need to take my digicam to capture all the shots for memory.

Pretty much anywhere.

Gaijin bars/clubs usually have many Japanese girls hang out in pairs waiting to go home with some guy for a one-night stand usually.... only to never see you again. They have all these cell phones but they don't necessarily want your number if you catch my drift.
Well, if you don't mind being treated like a meat-puppet in a place like that.... best of luck. They just want you for your body but can't really give a damn about you. (I know lots of guys don't mind that though).

Other than that, you're on your own.... but if you find you're having trouble getting the phone number of a woman you're interested in from more normal environments, you might want to ask what bar they go to at night time. :P
