There is no need for Japanese to learn english

Postby Maths Dude » Sat Oct 16, 2004 9:13 am

I say that there is no reason for the average Japanese to learn english. I think they are better off learning chinese or some other near neighbor language. Of course in business there is a need for some of them to learn it. As soon as they figure that out, the english business will be finished. And not a moment too soon! Good points?

1. It'll give all the eikaiwa drones a chance to get out of their ruts.
2. It'll hopefully put an end to that disgusting japlish and bastardization of thier language.

Finally, some recognition!

Actually I was just chatting to my good friend who owns an eikaiwa and he says business is shit because too many small schools have started up, and they are all competeing for the scraps left behind by the big schools. I also taught it for 5 years there, and I'll tell you there is no reason for them to learn it. The only reason the big schools made it to begin with was by trapping the students with the 'ticket' system, ie pay 400,000 yen for a certain number of hours.

The smaller schools usaully use the 'geshya' system and it's heaps harder to keep them. The quality is infact probably better in the smaller schools than the bigger ones becuase of that fact. I'd say thats one of the reasons why I left the industry, I got tired of teaching english to people who simply dont need to learn it. We asked alot of them before they joined 'why do you want to study english?' Most of them said, for travel (1% of which actually did go OS eventually) the other was for a 'hobby'. Those who did it for a 'hobby' quit first followed by those who did it for 'travel'. The real loong termers were the ones that became our 'friends' (usually over 40') and these wont quit till they die. I reckon the japanese have been brainwashed into thinking they need something when they dont. Thats consumerism for you. yuck
