I remember the katakana in the mane. I thought the "ki" was above the kirin's left eye, between the ear and the horn. I can't see it clearly on your pic but it looks similar. I can see a "ri" and, arguably a "n" but my eyesight has been deteriorating for years and I'm sure my brain just makes up things to humour me.
