HOW THE JAPANESE KEEP WARM

The Japanese, except for those living on one far northern island, have always-to my knowledge--lived in unheated houses. To do this, they've developed many beautiful techniques for keeping warm techniques which make a Japanese home quite different from what most Americans might imagine.

How can this be? Can unheated houses really be comfortable?

Yes they can. I grew up in Japan (ed. in which alternate universe was that) and was fortunate enough to always live in traditional homes. I love them dearly, in fact, and much prefer them to the centrally heated "ovens" so typical of our culture. Perhaps-if I describe a typical winter's day as we lived it in our Japanese house-you'll understand my feelings.

Anyway, about 10 or 15 minutes before going to bed, fill your yutampo with boiling water.

Yep, I always fill up my yutampo 10 minutes before bed. Trouble is at my age I sometimes have to get up in the middle of the night to empty my yutampo.

How about you guys. When do you you fill up your yutampo? Have you ever been caught with a full yutampo and noplace to go...

I hardly think that having 2 heaters on in every room is a "beautiful technique"....

My favorite part:

One very strong word of warning is in order here: Do not get the idea that a simple, small, charcoal-fired hibachi is just the thing you need to heat your "standard", heavily insulated Western house. Such a burner gives off dangerous gases that can dissipate quite harmlessly from a relatively well-ventilated Japanese home but that same gas might well build up to lethal levels in your tightly sealed building, and asphyxiate you.

Mmm, CO poisoning...

Well, today after school, bunch of students and teachers were getting out the "STOVES" I can not tell you how happy I am about that!!! It gets really cold in our school. We do not have walls in the hall way like we do back home. We actually go outside when we change classes. Some of the girls at my school will wear their gym pants under their skirt to stay warm and they also wear an extra sweater under thier blazer and they will wear a scarf and ear muffs and it is so funny to watch how far some will actually go. I have been told that the heaters will be turned on December 1st. I am so happy and excited about that!!!!! Take care!!!!

Another Mass Suicide Suspected in Japan

 http://www.goupstate.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041128/API/411280524

Four men were found dead Sunday in a sealed Tokyo apartment littered with charcoal stoves, a scene police said appeared to be Japan's latest suicide pact.

It appeared the four died of carbon monoxide poisoning, police said.
