Red or white wine? Which is more healthy?

Postby chris56789 » Fri Jan 14, 2005 7:08 pm

I was just curious......

sometimes I drink red and white wine from the same company, but I was wondering, let's say both the red and green grapes are grown in the same place, is the red wine more healthy for you(cause grapes got anti-oxidants in it) over the white wine made with green grapes?

I searched on the net for this question, but they only talk about what red or white wine goes with what foods and describes the texture or taste, but nothing about which is has more nutrition in it. I mean, all their is on the bottle of wine is mainly the surgeon general report, the alcohol %, and something about the where it comes from. It's not like a vitamin bottle where it tells you what % of nutrient contents are in each.

You know how some might say the color of the fruit has a lot to do with it Just like how red peppers probably have different nutrional value as green peppers, even if they both come from the same family and grown in the same soil area.

So simply put, which has more nutrition in it, red or white? If you don't know, what would be your guess just from either instinct or assumption. I'm interesting in hearing any thoughts.

What do you think?

Definitely red.
This is common knowledge in France, nobody knows exactly why though.
Plus there's the story about red wine preventing cancer

they're both about the same; so it's a tie
my g/f is a wine expert, and here's the deal:

certain white may contain more sugar, like Reisling, but your average white is no different from red; except that for the red, the grapeskins were left in the processing.

some wines are fortified, so naturally those with higher alcohol content are a little worse than those with a low 13% content.

cheap champagne can be bad, mostly from the unrefined sugars and starches; this is whats causes some hangovers to be worse than others.

Just drink MD 20/20 and you don't have to worry.

You will be so messed up you won't give a shit. Never saw it in Japan. But did find it in Korea at the grocery store on Suwon University campus. It was like $1.50 back then. Fun times.

But the skins of grapes used in red wine supposedly contain all the antioxidants that are good for you. But this is all unproven speculation, probably propagated by the red wine producers.

Some really cheap Italian red wines are fortified with small amounts of methyl alcohol, because they think it adds an extra kick. Methyl alcohol is toxic and will cause liver damage and in sufficient amounts, blindness. In smaller amounts, it will give you a headache and a hangover, which I presume is the intended effect.

But I've heard worse. I read about an incident in Vietnam, a local winemaker (rice wine probably but the article didn't specify) liked to add small amounts of pesticide to his wine, for that extra kick. But he got ahold of a different pesticide with higher toxicity than his usual pollutant and a dozen or so people who drank the wine died (including the stupid winemaker, serves him right).

And then there's toxic Australian wine, which we won't even get into.
