Japan Times' Amy Chavez looks back on an illustrious career

Amy Chavez: For better or worse: the 400th column
How does one measure 400 columns? It depends on how one measures time. You could measure it in...hate mail (hundreds)
It has been tempting to send one. Glad to see that others have stepped up.
It makes one wonder what in the hell I have been writing about all this time.

Is that a glimmer of self-awareness?
While many writers can boast about having written an article in an hour or two in a pinch, alas, it still takes me five to eight hours to write one.

That seems an incredible claim

"What?"
"Can you still blow? Like blow out a match?"
"Yes, of course I can."
"I can't," said Kazu-chan.
"That means you're old," I said, smiling.
Do you qualify for O-baa-chan Club?

The best I can come up with is that her columns are only written to amuse isolated Japanese housewives in the 'burbs or enaka. Come to think of it, the Japan Times targets Japanese not f'ed gaijin. Maybe if I was unemployed an then got a sex change, Japanese husband and lobotomy, her columns would seem better.

Jobs for the expat wives

I cant believe that she is still writing!! I found her columns opinionated, poorly written, and all in all, a waste of space!!! How she managed to reach 400 columns is beyond me!

Looking over the FCCJ website, I don't actually see her as a member, so there is a distinct possibility that she is not even a real journalist!!! Then again, you don't need to become a member of the FCCJ to prove you can write....but she needs all the help she can get!
Welcome.... to..the machines.....

there is some satisfaction in knowing that I've made it this far. A column is something that must be produced on a certain day of every week of every year, no matter what else is happening in your life, such as your day job, near-"karoshi" and marital spats. All at once. Luckily, I write a humor column.

 self-mockery, naivity or stupidity???

Damn, you guys are kind of rough on her. I never thought she tried to be a professional writer. She is more like someone who writes for a small town paper.

I hope you guys don't review the aticles I write for Crack Whore magazine. 8)
