There are a few reasons..
But mainly because when I was in High school studying Japanese, my name was initially badly translated to something sounding like Trashy. It was really funny and kinda stuck. I have friends at home who still affectionately call me Trashy or simply Trash.
In Australia people tend to use nicknames that can seem a bit rude from the outside, but it is only for people who you are really good friends with.. This is perhaps a cultural thing... but Australians like to laugh at themselves *alot*.
So I chose GomiGirl because a) I am a girl and b) I like alliteration and c) Gomi as you know is the word for trash or garbage. I use it in a few different places/forums as my screen name.
Yeah...Aussies....(Kiwis too) deifinitely take the piss out of those they like. I didnt realise this and it cause some serious friction in the office since I was the only American in the office. I thought they were bagging on me (which they were), and my friend Mick (Michael) from Ireland clued me in to what was goin on and he told me to take the piss back outta them. It worked and was a great hoot.
You English speaking typed from south of the equator REALLY know how to put away the brew by the way. I thought I had a high tolerance.
And I'm huge by American standards and this one chick Theresa nearly drank me under the table.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.
