Getaway to Nikko - suggestions?

Postby Caustic Saint » Sun Mar 06, 2005 10:32 pm

I've got a vacation at the end of this month (10 days - woo!) and am thinking of taking a gf off to Nikko for a couple days. Anybody ever made the trip up there and have any suggestions on things to do and places to stay?

I live in Tochigi, so I can't recommend anywhere to stay, as I can go to Nikko for the day.

To be honest, you can see Nikko in a day. There's obviously the famous Tokugawa shrine etc, and a lake. And that's about it.

Okunikko is good for hiking (watch out for the bears!) and onsens, but other than that, I can't imagine staying there for 10 days....

Tobu railways have a direct train there from Utsunomiya and you can catch a bus from the station to the lake -got some nice pedal swan boats...

Sorry can't tell you much more than that.

Oh! You can go to Edo Mura for the ninja shows! 6000 per person, though.

Nikko is cool, but there is usually a million people there. Maybe someone can suggest somewhere better to you.

It doesn't absolutely have to be Nikko. That's just the first place that came to mind when I starting thinking of someplace close to Tokyo for an overnight getaway.

I'm open to just about any place, really.
