Gaijin card problem

Postby Laced » Sun Mar 20, 2005 12:12 am

Hi.
I received my temporary gaijin card in January and was supposed to come in Febriary to pick up the card. I forgot to do this. Unfortunately I am travelling for two weeks around Japan with my parents as of Tuesday 8am, and Monday is a bank holiday, So I can't go back to the bureau until April 3rd

What is the outcome going to be?

Depends...

If you are stopped (or have an accident or anything else involving the police) before April 3rd and asked to show your card and cannot produce one or produce an out of date card you will be 'detained' until the police can verify your details with your local shiyakusho.

You won't be arrested if everything checks out but you can reckon on a full day of explaining and statement writing in some small dirty interview room in the back of some police station. An all round hassle.

Tuesday morning call your local shiyakusho and tell them what happened and ask for an extension till April. Should be ok. Get the name of the person who deals with it for you, write it down and have a nice trip.

Thanks,
I've taken a later train ticket on Tuesday so will sort it out in person. Any idea as to what the penalty charge is?

The charge for not picking up your card? Nothing.
I didn't pick up my card until about 6 weeks after I was supposed to and they didn't say anything!

As Ketou wrote, there will be no penalty charge.

However, you may be required to write a short explanation as to why you were late. You can do this in English and just sign at the bottom. They'll have a form there for you to write on and it will only take a minute or two.

Same here. 3 weeks late picking it up.

They didn't even mention that I was late. Thanks for putting my mind at rest though.
