Japanese Music

Postby B Gallagher » Sat Apr 02, 2005 10:49 am

Hey all...
I'm seriously missing some new Japanese music for some reason (funny, since the last time I went there was 2002). :P
Can anyone suggest any good songs to check out? Basically anything.. be it pop, rock, electronic, contemporary, whatever.. just so long as it's good. :)

Thanks. :D

I wholeheartedly second that. Although I doubt Tokyo Jihen will ever be able to top Ms. Ringo's 2003 opus, Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana, they still do rock it out pretty well.

For some kickin' J-electronica, Globe certainly comes to mind. Most think they lost it after they basically became a Trance-only act, but I personally think it's been the best move yet for them. Look out for anything after (and especially) their album, Outernet.

Although they too also been fading from the public eye of late, Dragon Ash is another group still putting out quality material. Their most recent album, Harvest, combined their old rock style with their newer style hip-hop and newest style breakbeats to make for a pretty awesome listening experience.

So much else to check out-Joujouka is a great underground rock/new age/trance band, Rip Slyme is a shining example of Japanese rap done right, hide is perfect for the industrial/heavy rock set, and anything created by Hideki Naganuma is fucking gold.

Sorry for being so long-winded, but theres a lot of great stuff out there if you look for it. Good luck!

Check out the 19-t guys. It's stupid electronic music made by japanese digital b-boys.
They're always doing parties in the tokyo area under different moniker. You can find their cds at tower records and warsaw in shibuya.
On the rock side i still like Zazen Boys very much.

The Pillows are a great J-rock band and just finished their first US tour. As for specific songs from them, I reccomend One Life, Instant Music, Funny Bunny, amd Ride on Shooting Star.

a big thums up for the previously mentioned rip slyme and dragon ash,

how could i forget to mention the sublime m-flo and the increasingly eclectic cornelius and dragon ash?
