I think there used to be single day tickets but now the smallest is a 4 day 20,000 yen ticket.

there is the seishun juu hachi kippu. Its 12500 yen (give or take a few hundred yen) and its five tickets that are good for all you can ride for one day, but no express trains or shinkansen. You can use it yourself 5 times, or you can share it with people, so 2 of you can use it twice, and there will be one dsys worth left on it.

Its actually a punch card more than tickets now that I think of it though. More than the 4000 you were talking about, but you can use it lots.

When your done with the temples: check out the yakitori place opposite the station - the owner is Indian - really tasty and reasonably priced.

Ha, I went there but i only read this post now. I had to go there because I am on atkins, so I am pretty much limited to what I can eat.

Atkins works fucking well, I recomend it to anybody.

Thanks everybody else, there is no such thing as a 1 Day pass anymore, and you cant get a student discount on JR unless the journey is over 80Km.
