Temperature tops 30 C for 37th straight day in Tokyo, ties record
TOKYO Aug. 11 Kyodo -The temperature topped 30 C in Tokyo for 37 days in a row Wednesday, tying the record set in 1995, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
A new record for a prolonged heat wave is likely to be set Thursday since measurements began at the Otemachi observation point in central Tokyo in 1923, the agency said.

BLAME TIBET!

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Aug 12, 2004 11:57 am

BLAME TIBET!

Scientists trace origin of hot summer to Tibet
Yomiuri /Aug 12
This summer's heat wave is likely the result of a high-pressure system that formed in the upper troposphere over Tibet and moved over Japan, according to the results of a study by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology. ...
...Takeshi Enomoto, a researcher at the agency's [[World-Domination]] Earth Simulator, investigated past records, he discovered that years in which unusually high temperatures were recorded were almost all years that had also experienced the westerly winds. He confirmed this using computer models.
When he entered into a computer model data regarding the flow of the high-pressure system from July 20, the day on which record-high temperatures for the month of July were recorded in locations throughout the Kanto region due to the foehn phenomenon, which causes steep increases in temperature, he found that a large portion of the Tibetan high-pressure system had gradually moved eastward from July 16, arriving over Japan on July 20.

Oh, I'm very adaptable my good man. Make mine a double.

Taking the walk of shame home this morning after first train it started raining like hell. The wind was blowing softly. MAN IT FELT GOOD.

All day it's been gloriously overcast and cool. Inokashira Park was EMPTY on a Sunday. Amazing!

We enjoyed our Sta'Bux-uh Gurande Saizu in relative peace. A 62 year old dude chatted with us for awhile. A good laugh.

Damn, I guess it's too much hoping that it will stay this way....

No concrete.+ Wide streets + Parks = not JKanto

Postby Taro Toporific » Wed Aug 18, 2004 11:20 am

No bay concrete. Wide streets. Parks. What farkquing place is this? Certainly not Kanto.

Tokyo's 'heat island' keeps breezes at bay(Japan Times) Aug 18
... The capital's high temperatures have been blamed on the "heat island" effect -- the high concentration of concrete and asphalt and few areas of vegetation and open water. Experts are now also pointing to another culprit: the expanding wall of skyscrapers that line Tokyo Bay....
...If the heat island phenomenon is to be curbed, "no more building complexes should be constructed along the bay" said Masakazu Moriyama, a professor at Kobe University's department of architecture and civil engineering.
For breezes to have clear paths through the city, it is necessary to have open spaces, including wide streets, he said, adding that building regulations to create wind paths are needed.
.... Vegetation, such as that found in parks, and bodies of water also curb temperature rises by decreasing heat through evaporation, Meteorological Agency official Koji Ishihara said.

Tokyo Gov: Measures Against the Heat Island (Japanese Only)
As Taro points out...Uchimizu seems to get most attention...

I think if they are serious, Tokyo should go for a full-blown water festival.

TMG: The thermal environment map and areas designated for the implementation of measures against the Heat Island Phenomenon
TMG has designated four specific areas for the implementation of measures against the Heat Island Phenomenon. As part of Tokyo's future urban renewal, the "designated areas for the implementation of measures against the Heat Island Phenomenon" (referred to below as the "Designated Areas") will be used as a guide for private sector redevelopment projects, as well as to focus such efforts as water retentive paving, the introduction of greenery along walls, and planting lawns in school grounds.
1. Central Tokyo Area (business cluster area measures) approximately 1,600 hectares

2. Shinjuku Area (business cluster area measures) approximately 600 hectares

3. Osaki & Meguro Area (high-density residential area measures) approximately 1,100 hectares

4. Areas Surrounding Shinagawa Station (measures and guides concerning the development plan) approximately 600 hectares

Heating up yet?

Postby mr. sparkle » Thu Jun 23, 2005 9:06 am

Is it heating up REALLY BAD yet?

I have some time and some dough.
Flights are around $750 taking off next week.
But if it's way gnarley now, maybe I'll wait.

It's actually not as hot as it has been. The rain is noticeably absent... it is humid though, at 83%.

Here's the 15 day forecast for Tokyo:

Noticeably absent? What was that stuff that's been falling on me for the last couple of days?
