It does taste different!

Postby Maths Dude » Mon Feb 14, 2005 8:08 pm

I drank alot of green tea while I was in Japan. I took the same brand of tea home to Oz, but it just didn't taste the same. Now I dont even bother drinking it. My woman also loved to eat 'timtams' (like a cookie) in Oz, but when she ate them in Japan, she hated them. WTF is goin on!?!?

Tea time

Postby Mike Oxlong » Mon Feb 14, 2005 8:49 pm

Water quality is everything. Poms found the same thing back in the day when they were still importing tea from China (before they stole it and started growing their own in India). Tea sent to England just didn't taste the way it did when brewed in the Middle Kingdom. One bright chap had the sense to realize that dirty water don't really make tasty tea. Same holds true for beer...

Yeah, probably brewed in the USA under license of Sapporo. Same thing happens here - foreign beers brewed in Japan under license of the original brewery don't taste like the original. Better to go with the strictly imported stuff. Especially since many European brews don't contain additives/preservatives. Japan uses rice, corn syrup, and other fillers, cost-cutters, preservatives... :crazy3:

What always gets me is when you buy Sapporo in the US it's says "imported" so you think you are getting an imported Japanese beer. This is in fact true - from Canada!

Japan doesn't allow the many of the common red and purple food dyes which give Grape Fanta that wonderfully nasty taste I luuuuve. :P

Actually I have grown to prefer the taste of Diet Coke here over Diet Coke back home. In Australia I dunno - it's just not chemical tasting enough.

AO, just check the label on the side of the bottle. It will state exactly where the beer was brewed and from what country it was imported. Some Sapporo beer I've seen in the states is actually imported from Japan. But the other J-beers are brewed in Canada at the Molson Breweries and imported to the States from there.

eww i dont like japanese milk. its fat content is too high and it tastes weird. I drink super trim NZ milk.

NZ chocolate is heaps sweeter than Japanese chocolate. When i came back to NZ it took me ages to be able to eat a whole bar

Japanese mass produced bread is horrible. I cannot stomach the stuff. It has way too much sugar in it, tastes like some kind of danish gone wrong.

ugh yes. japanese chocolate is so.. nanka.. .'chunky' and solid, compared with NZ chocolate. NZ chocolate seems to be a lot creamer and sweeter.

and better, imho.

and man, there's nothing than smelling freshly made bread in a bakery over in jland.. man they have some wicked concuctions that people would never thing of over here.

"it's chocolate, injected into the bread."
"what? get out! no way!" sorta thing :P

man i'm tired. and i need to change my sig. lol

I have long suspected there is some non-wheat additive in Japanese white bread, it reminds me of Potato Bread I get here in the US. I think it has "rice flour" added to it.

Hoard in a nice air-tight container, save for years then sell them to the highest bidder on the next generation of Ebay. With that cash brought in, buy yourself a nice little island in the middle of Canada! Dub it in my name as the soverign nation of Christopia!!!

And I too noticed that things tasted quite different in Canadaland. Coke tasted less-sweet but more carbonated. Sprite... well, you just can't even FIND regular (non-diet) sprite here ANYWHERE (except in the 100-yen stores.. but they only sell the 200ml cans!).
