What do you like most about Japan?

Postby terebi_fanatic » Thu Dec 09, 2010 6:03 am

Couldn't find a thread like this anywhere.

- How clean the streets are
- How safe it feels to walk the streets at night
- How clerks greet you when you come and leave the store/restaurant
- Water temperature in the summer months
- Absence of snow storms in Tokyo
- Original street fashion
- Saying anything to a fellow Gaijin and being 90% sure that nobody understands a word you're saying
- Asahi biru

Also this may sound odd, but I really like athe construction material used in pavements and certain roof tops (enoshima for example), they both seem to shine and reflect the light in a unique way. Looks especially cool after the rain passes

That's all I got for now

i'm a FOB, only 2 weeks.

Original post may have sounded a bit tarded, but trust me I'm not the trolling back packer, anime freak.

I was there for only 2 weeks, but I've already seen some odd things which I didn't like too much (like the time I wore the Japan soccer team's jersey just to see how people would react)

Percisely why I wanted to ask people like you. People that have lived there well past the honeymoon stage... I know for sure it won't be the roof or the pavement lol

I lived 14 years in Montreal, Quebec and I can still name a few things I like about it:

- Big amounts of festivals in the city (jazz festival, just for laughs, winter lights)
- Nature (lots of places to go camping/fishing and stuff, 6 hours drive and
you're in the boonies with bears and shit)
- Concerts, Internet Marketing seminars etc. etc. plenty of that
- Hot hot girls (nice styles, all kinds of nationalities)
- Also the fact that I get to speak French

Anyways, dunno why I just named them but yeah... lots of good things to name about the place even after 14 years of being here...

Anyways, dunno why I just named them but yeah... lots of good things to name about the place even after 14 years of being here...

1) If you live in major metropolises like Kanagawa Prefecture and Tokyo-To, you can experience everything. Less than 40 miles north you can ski; 40 miles east you can surf; 40 miles west you can go climbing; 40 miles south you can experience history - 2 hours south or west you can experience another country. These are all rough estimates. In every direction you can experience a little bit of everything I just mentioned, plus you can access all of these areas by train, plane, or bus. You don't need a car.

2) Food here, while some Westerners may not agree, is by far the best in terms of quality and taste. No better milk, cheese, meat, or produce you will find anywhere in the world but Japan. Quality not quantity is the general focus.

3) Over conveniences, like mini-marts, and convenience stores stay open 24hrs. a day, and offer a wider selection of goods. I was up late one night and needed to get a CD-R data disk. Went over to 7-11 and picked up exactly what I needed at 2am. When I travel to places in California like Fullerton and Santa-Ana I'm scared to go in to shops there because there are no menus in English. If I want to eat Chinese food or any other ethnic cuisine, I need to go to a more urbanized area, like in the ghetto, and eat there, not in areas where the population is predominantly Chinese. I'm not saying you can't go to these places, but if you do the people will make it known that you are not welcome there.

I have even seen gas stations with signs written only in Chinese or Vietnamese! Is this America? In Japan I can walk into almost any establishment, including non-Japanese ones to eat without fear and not feel like I'm being cheated or (un)welcomed. I remember one time I went to a Buddhist center to worship one day and one of the Korean obasaans whispered to me " don't you have your own god?" In Japan, Southeast Asians don't openly discriminate or any other Asian. All of these other races tend to fall in line with the Japanese way and mannerisms when it comes to dealing with people whereas in America these Asian groups act like total a$$holes. I love the "order" that exists in this country. One day you someone other than me will understand this.

4) I can walk through the streets at night and never get haggled for money by vagrants and homeless. Shop keepers here in Japan rarely haggle. No tipping for taxi and other services.

5) Love hotels galore

6) There's a city for almost every age group: sugamo - Harajuku for grannies; Harajuku - young trendy; Omotesando - 30s professional, and so on.

7) Vending machines that offer a wider selection of soft drinks, and even alcohol and tabacoo. In America you can no longer purchase cigs from a vending machine, last I checked.

8 ) Orderly society....The population of Los Angeles is roughly 4 million people and we can't stand each other. The size of Tokyo's population is 12million and counting. In Japan 70,000 people can commute to work on a train with rarely any problems. That's not possible in L.A.

The list goes on....

how long have you lived there? amazing list btw, you have a way with words.

Think the first point sounded most appealing and peculiar at the same time.

The proximity of the opposites is amazing. From swimming to climbing or from 'freezing cold' to 'luke warm'...

Please do go on...

lulz! a bit of mucus just hit the keyboard (no shit!)

i was in Cuba last year and met a couple from Belgium.

Now, I believe I have a pretty thick Russian accent when I speak French, but they said they couldn't hear it. All they picked up is my strong Quebecois french.

I felt like punching and thanking them all at the same time.

When I said poetry I meant French from France. Btw if you go east to Gaspesie even Montrealers don't understand them, it's really quite horrible...

SJ, some people are not aware of what is required for creating the world's best cheeses and that this requirement is exactly what preclude such cheeses from import into Japan, a country which is incapable of producing these top class categories.

This of course does not preclude the same people from talking about the taste of "great" J-cheese (Yuki Brand triangles, etc.) on the net....

To be honest, the forum gets a thread exactly like this every six months or so and most regular members will have posted to one of them at some stage or another.

They aren't that easy to locate in the archives because, by definition, they include terms which occur in dozens of other threads so you can't narrow your search criteria very successfully. Most also get sidetracked quickly so none have made it to "sticky"status. It took me a while just to find this one and this one as examples.

That's not to say your thread wasn't worth starting, just a possible reason why it might not maintain a lot of momentum.

Cunning linguists will inform you that Québécois French is similar to the 17th century koiné of Paris.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.
