Who stole my rolling blackout?

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:24 am

TEPCO keeps crying wolf and saying the power to my beer cooler is going to be cut.

The fucking public-address loudspeakers started bleating yet another distorted announcement that load shedding of my Group IV 9:20 to 13:00 will be occurring "momanaku" momentarily (as they have been doing for the past hour and half).

It's 10AM. Do you know where your 9:20 blackout is?

Group 1 here, still nothing. Supposed to start at 3:20 pm, 4:00 pm now.
If it does go out, I'll try to put a note on here via the mobile (if it still works...).

My understanding is that the rolling blackouts only take place if power demands during that time frame exceed power availability. So if there is enough conservation going on then no blackout happens.

And apparently, if you have something important in your ward, like say, a major train station or an NTT facility, you aren't even on the blackout schedule. My mother-in-law has a condo near yokohama station and nishi-ku is excempt.

Apparently, if you someone important living in one of the blue-tarped cardboard boxes on the Tama River like me in the southernmost slums of Denechofu (or if you live within in the middle of Tokyo), you are exempt from any blackouts, neener neener.

Are schools exempt during working hours?

My school hasn't had one, but my apartment in the same suburb has had 3.

My wife said our entire neighborhood was blacked out with one exception: the sprawling Soka Gakkai compound. Obviously, patronage = an exception to the blackout.

Start a cult or maybe work to get an international cult well established in Japan? Hmm, is Scientology big here yet?

That's what I immediately asked my wife, and she said no, some members told her the cult had been given some kind of waiver from TEPCO for being a "designated social welfare provider" or some such shit.

We have lucked out in our Group 1 town and haven't had a blackout yet. Of course, by saying that the power will probably go out in a moment.

So far we've only had our power go out at times when it wasn't scheduled. Not a single one of the damn scheduled blackouts has hit yet which is throwing off my work schedule something fierce.

(Yes, my panties are in bunch, thank you, I am thankful we don't have worse things to worry about except that silly irradiation stuff, but being self-employed I don't get to take days off for the post quake stuff if I still hope to have money coming in in 2 months time and since the quake destroyed one of my 2 work pcs, I'm paranoid about the drives on the remaining one getting murdered by sudden blackouts ).

Maybe I should sign up for sokka, they sure do seem to get a lot of benefits. Maybe they'll introduce me to Ueto Aya.

Looks like we will get our first actually scheduled power outage. Kind of happy, gives me an excuse to stop working and go to sleep...:wall::thumbs:

I recommend buying a good UPS. Dell sells a variety of APC models that should give you enough time to safely shut down your computer. Here's one for smaller office computers or POS systems that will probably do well. There are a couple of larger models if your machine sucks a lot more juice, but of course the price climbs quickly as the rated power goes up.

Next I recommend downloading and installing CrashPlan. Get an external hard disk and have it back up to that so you have near-line backup in case of disk failure. If you have a few computers you want to back up you can have them back up to each other instead of using an external hard disk. Get their "Family Plan" which is $120/year and lets you back up a max of 10pcs to their off site locations. CrashPlan only takes a few minutes to download and install and the backups thereafter are totally automatic. More than worth the peace of mind.
