Truth be told, looking through the site, it takes some skill, if you want to find the owner here; without Coligny's hint I wouldn't have guessed, if I were new here. All access to the member list is denied to the little people (or is it only me?).

Speaking of admin, what's up with the other site GG?

When I try to post there I get an error message, though I can still read contents. Nobody seem to have posted there for more than a week.

Is Hammer OK? Just asking, and a bit worried, because Covid-19 seems to be escalating in Miyagi prefecture.

Grumpy, Coligny, Matsuki, do you know what is going on?

It's working OK now with an explanation. The hosting company changed their PHP or something and then were tardy responding. Mr Hammer has sorted it though.

Nope, although I do have a relevant condition. Everyone around was a bit surprised as people in their 80s haven't got one yet. Unfortunately my doctor was also surprised and hasn't got any stock yet!

Maybe you're more dangerous, because gaijin (and travelling abroad now and then). Anyway, if you're getting the Corona, from now on it's your doctor's fault.

Do you have a choice in what vaccine you can get?

You know the AstraZeneca vaccine has a risk of thrombosis for under-60 people? Though the majority at risk are women, it is now banned for under-60 age in Germany and the Netherlands.

The alternative Pfizer vaccine is available in Japan: wife's family-in-law member working in the medical field recently got it.

The letter specifies Pfizer vaccine so I should worry about extremely rare and anaphylactic shock instead. It would seem Germany and The Netherlands are acting with an abundance of caution.

With all my family/friends in the states vaccinated, I'm still wondering why my physician friends here are still waiting....and I'm hearing more and more locals talk of how scary it is.

Meanwhile, I dodged a bullet with a university friend who was supposed to grab lunch with me while in town. She felt sick, thought it was a cold, but we cancelled the meet up. A day later, she's burning up, daughter is burning up, 'rona mambo is dancing it's way through the household. Mom is 65...and despite the situation, she is not able to get vaccinated. No bueno senor Suga.

Yep, everyone I know in the UK has had at least their first dose. Talk of how scary it is doesn't help us get out of this at all and is basically unfounded as far as I can see. Many tens of millions of doses have now been given in Israel, The US and the UK without serious issue. We should be getting on with it and also pushing supplies of vaccines out to the rest of the world as fast as we can.

Wow Wage, you must have something quite serious to get that letter. I hope you stay safe. My father-in law, who's 90 and living in communal care in Sendai, has not heard a dicky bird about when he will be getting his first vaccine. I have high blood pressure and asthma, and my doctor has told me to realistic not expect a shot until early September, the way thing are developing here in Japan.
I'd get a plane back to the UK in early July - by then all Brits should be vaccinated - but, although I have a UK registered place of abode, for banking reasons, the wife doesn't and I can't, with any clear conscience, get the vaccine, while she doesn't. It's disgraceful, the slow speed of vaccinations in Japan.

Pfizer appears to be the best, as far as I understand.

It offers the highest rate of protection, is the broadest (i.e., protects against most variants), and appears to have much fewer side effects than the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The only point of possible worry may be that it is a new type of vaccine. That is, it is based on mRNA, and there is little experience about the long-term effects. However, RNA is different from DNA in several aspects, and it appears unlikely to affect one's DNA.

Anaphylactic shock is a side effect of many vaccines, and I understand that it mostly occurs in people who have had such symptoms with vaccinations before.

That's nice of you, and thanks for the good wishes. I'm actually not too bad. The letter just says it is because of age (65) so luck of the draw as much as anything I think. I read somewhere that for people 65 and over the schedule is starting April 12th. I think they have gone for a localised rather than centralised approach so it will depend a bit on where we live when and how things will happen.

I think until things really improve in the UK you are safer here, even without a vaccination, to be honest. Why the UK and other European countries were hit so hard is a mystery but there is no denying the impact. It's been pretty traumatic in comparison.

In hindsight, I think it's mostly due to masking. Too many potential mass spreading situations than never panned out here to deny how effective it has been. That being said, I wonder if any legit progress has been made on localized mask production around the world. Reliance on the CCP for PPE is a pretty black and white issue at this point. Round 3 could happen at any time and it's the kind of insurance every country obviously needs.

You may well be right that it is important, in particular if more or less everyone is wearing the non woven similar to surgical masks people wear here. I'm still not sure that explains it all though - It really has been so much worse in Europe and America even though test and trace were much more deployed as were strict lockdowns.

Less initial and secondary seeding, less "at-risk" people probably meant less transmission. Carb overload disease in the west is real haha. At this point, I know more than a few people who were exposed, had no symptoms, but tested positive for anti-bodies. I think if you were exposed with a limited viral load and you're healthy, there's a good chance you developed anti-bodies. Does that mean you're totally immune? I sure as hell wouldn't be risky or refuse vaccination, but it's possible you have some immunity and less chance of spreading.

Fatty Boombahs aint at all usual in Japan and severely obese people with almost deformed versions of it are rare here. I`m not referring to people in our home countries who honestly can`t help their body shapes or conditions - obesity at different levels has become normal cause of crap food, king sizes in the US and the idea that swilling soft drinks, soda to the north americans, is just about a daily acitivity.

The Js don`t take drugs - their drug is alcohol, the crystal meth use in North America and Oz, fenantyl or whatever it is in the US, other hard drugs just aint accessible here unlike opiates elsewhere. And the outstanding point is the lack of mobility in Japan as in people with double or triple or whatever passports moving around the globe, living elsewhere and then going back to their home cuntries frequently. The Js live, work and study abroad sometimes but that is nothing compared to the mobility in western cuntries. Infectious diseases thrive on mobility.

Italy - a no brainer, as someone with a lot of mates from Italian backgrounds, it didn`t surprise me that old people were struck down so quickly in the north. Chinese people have been coming and going for some years now there cause they work in the textile industry, some are originally from the virus hotpots of China and had been visiting there. Italian old people have a lot to do with younger ones as families are very close, some still have grandma and gramps living with em.

And living in Asia especially in East Asia exposes you to a lot of viruses making their way from China and Mongolia - historically it was always the case and even now. I`d say most of us living in Asia have developed stronger responses to the viruses circulating in this part of the world. Yeah, masks help but while paper masks are more effective than chocolate teapots, they aint all that.

In Tokyo the Js think they can move up close to anybody cause they`re wearing a paper mask. It seems the Delta variant is gonna laugh at that but again, Japan and the UK/Europe,for example, have directly contrasting populations and population mobility. No comparison between the movement of people internationally in multi-cultural countries and Japan.

As for the vaccine, some non-crazies have pointed out that vaccines such as the polio one took years to develop and has wiped it out where people are vaccinated. There are medical people who think the Covid-19 vaccines are rushed and even some who think the Pzifer and Moderna are `gene therapy`. I know fuck all about that but I`d be interested to hear from people who do.

mRNA vaccines have been under development for decades.

Science based medicine | No, the Moderna and Pfizer RNA vaccines for COVID-19 will not “permanently alter your DNA”
