Choko doesn't seem to call around here much any more, but this old SNL skit involving vocabulary appropriation from other languages reminded me of some of the issues he used to raise.

Gwackamohl !!!!!!!!!!

If she's not goofing around she's an idjit, but if any more JETi types correct me over Kyodo or Tokeeo when I'm speaking English we're gonna go Pa-ru Ha-ba- or Hahrashoma. Nope, over pronunciation is probably worse, being a sin of comission. Pretence is far worse than simple ignorance, or even stupidity. Great SNL pull, though. Poor little Phil Hartman.

But surely we should not be importing words from another language just because they are stylish, and we should be giving it its proper name of testicle sauce! The Spanish is after all a corruption of the Nahuatl anyway. You can't have it both ways. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ahuacatl#Derived_terms

Testicle sauce it is then. Just give me a moment, I'll prepare some for you.

Unfortunately, that point was not well expressed by posting only an audio file (accompanied by a static graphic being text of the word only). That alone suggests you wanted to answer "No, it is pronounced like this."

If you expected people to understand that you wanted to mean "and also like..." or "or, alternatively," it might have helped for you to include words to that effect.
Otherwise, people start to think that you change your position based on whether your statements have been challenged. Only the magic combination of Canadian nationality and a freelance writing job* gives you the right to do that.

I don't know about anyone else here, but my crystal ball is back at the polishers for its shaken. I can't read your mind at the moment.

I've never heard it called that before but according to Wikipedia:

Despite its name, it predates the arrival of dairy cattle in the Americas, and thus was not originally made as a butter substitute.

Why did the Aztecs use the same word for testicles?

  1. Because when you squeeze their textured surface, oily, fragrant, green mush oozes out until you come across the resilient core which is slightly springy when subjected to sufficient pressure
  2. Because they were fond of the English language pun, avocado pear/pair of male gonads
  3. Because the most effective way to remove the pits, after cutting the surrounding flesh in half, is to slam down from a distance with a kitchen knife, and then twist slightly

More importantly, I want to know why the French use the same word for these testicles as they do for lawyers.

Get your ears checked. Even in the description is says:

The pronunciation of the Spanish "ll" can vary widely from region to region. Most commonly, it is pronounced like the "y" in the word "yes," or like the "lli" in the word "million."

Look for marks on the face and hands!

Columbus “sailed the ocean blue” in 1492. Just three years later, in 1495, the first syphilis epidemic broke out among armies in Italy at the Siege of Naples, seemingly brought by French soldiers who in turn probably got the disease from Spanish mercenaries. Because of the French popularly spreading it, syphilis was initially known as the “French disease.”
