Everyone knows Japan's a safety country. Nothing to worry about.

Lurk, are you sure all four seasons are safe? I'm so worried now, I'll have to go to Roppongi and ask some people...Maybe some of Iraira's Nigerians will know for sure!

The main four seasons are perfectly safe!
It's the in-between ones – typhoon, earthquake, tsunami, mudslide, and now nuclear meltdown (courtesy TEPCO) – that you have to watch out for.

Hammer! Glad to hear you're not still treading water. You shouldn't bad mouth TEPCO, who else are you going to get to screw something up that badly. I mean other energy companies might actually do it right. We're lucky to have TEPCO.

You missed the seasons of volcanic eruption, bursting damn, shoddy construction, and occasional tornado...

Natural or not.. it's the greatest thing since the sliced bread.

Ask Greji. He's got my back on this one.

Hiya everyone,
I used to lurk here a little bit a long time ago, thought I'd jump in!
I'm London at the moment, thinking of moving to Japan again next year after a 12 month stint in 2007.

Lots of factories, lots of brazilians, and believe it or not, quite a bit of petty crime. Toyota stalled production and will probably make some cuts when they resume putting the brazilians out of work.

Good luck.

What do you mean by "petty crime"? Shoplifting and such? What about Home breakins? Any fear of that?

Ota reminds me of dorchester without the guns. I do a fair amount of work with the companies that have factories up there. It doesn't bother me too much, probably because I grew up in the city, but the Japanese people who run the factories won't live there. If you're teaching Engrish you probably won't have anything worth breaking into your house for.

I grew up in DFW, so not unfamiliar with big cities. The ESL stab was low man, low. Just wondered if there was any "real" crimes going on. I doubt its worse than walking through Oak Cliff at night. Guess I should be more specific with, if I bought a moped, you think anyone would steal it?

Bikes, scooters (mopeds), and umbrellas are probably the most commonly stolen things in Japan.

Wasn't an insult. If you are a FG living in Ota you either assemble cars or teach Engrish. You seem to speak english so 1+1=2. Engrish teachers make about 3 million yen a year. After taxes, food, nenkin, rent, furniture for your place, weekly train rides into tokyo, bar tabs, and love hotels there won't be much left. You also have to keep in mind that you need to have about $2k US for an escape fund.

QFT

I don't recall ever buying an umbrella.

After these recent happenings I got curious about the reaction and opinions of other gaijins was so I visted a few "news" sites and to be honest was very dissapointed so then I thought I'd join a Japan forum, but it turned out to be people who used to live here, or love it, or think j-pop and pokemon rock.

After a few more searches I found this place and thought the name was awesome.

Twice happily married American male with 2 great kids in shougakkou. I work in the entertainment industy so I don't use English that much 'cept for a few friends. My kids hate English.

Anyway just hoping to find some interesting and honest conversation.

Hello guys, I joined here because I am fucking sick of being a hiki for 2 years in Japan. The problem is, I don't know where to start socializing. Any advice for me?
