Slightly disappointingly, it turns out that the real name of Harry Knowles wife is Patricia Cho. Harry has been calling her "Yoko" on his website for some time now so presumably that has just been his running joke on marrying an Asian girlfriend.

In other developments, one usually informed source is adamant that Pete Shelley, lead singer and guitarist of UK band the Buzzcocks has married a Japanese girl. This would be somewhat surprising since Shelley is bisexual and seems to prefer the less fairer sex but it wouldn't be the first time for such a union. Another Japanese friend who tracks the comings and goings of old UK punk bands is equally convinced that it can't be true and a cursory search of the net throws up no real supporting evidence. He does like Japanese food, apparently. This is all I could find:

December 2000:
...As a footnote, years later me and my girlfriend (now wife) Beatrice were in a Camden Town pub gig when i saw "Pete Shelley" (Buzzcocks) amongst the audience at the bar. I thought i must say hello (pissed probably) and offered to get him and his Japanese girlfriend a drink (Guinness).

Charlie Harper of the UK Subs says:
Pete Shelley is a great mate and great person. I heard a funny story about Pete Shelley. He ran off with a young girl or something, because he had this Japanese girlfriend in London, but he’s run off somewhere, I think it’s South America to live in Rio or some place. When we were down there we heard these things

This one is a bit of a stretch as far as "rich" or "famous" is concerned:

Times: Scrabble champ skitters off for a night on the tiles with £1,000
Paul Allan, a former international decathlete, was crowned British Scrabble Champion yesterday, after a prodigious show of wordplay that probed the more obscure backwaters of the English lexicon...Amassing a total score of 1,908 points, words from Mr Allan’s repertoire on the day included “bum”, “fatwa” and, rather appropriately, “genii”. In a show of emotion not normally associated with the game, his final word was “ai”, which has an English meaning (a three-toed sloth from South America) but also means “love” in Japanese. This he dedicated to his Japanese wife...more...

Peering back into the mists of time:

ImageImage

[floatr]Image[/floatr]George Dennison Morgan, nephew to the banking colossus J P Morgan, married Yuki Kato in 1904. Born in 1881,she was the daughter of a samurai family who had fallen on hard times. Her elder sister had been sold to Gion where she had gone on to manage one of the teahouses so Oyuki became a maiko when she turned 14 and soon established herself as a leading geisha. Morgan met her in 1901 and began courting her. She already had a lover at the time enrolled in Kyoto University and her story became the stuff of scandals in the newspapars. Morgan bought her out of her contract for 40,000 yen which was an unheard of sum at the time and they married in Yokohama. Accounts say that the marriage meant that she lost her Japanese citizenship and the couple went to America. Morgan's family did not approve, however, and shunned her which led them to relocate to high society in Paris. They were a famous couple in Europe but Morgan died alone during a trip to Spain in 1915. This left her in some difficulty since she could not become an American citizen and a major battle began over George's money with the Morgans determined to deny her his inheritance. She seems to have won her case and stayed in Paris where she is said to have had a lover but never remarried. Possibly a second marriage would have meant forfeiting the inheritance. In 1938, she left France as the threat of war prompted her to move back to Kyoto. She was never really accepted back into polite company in Japan and lived out of the public eye. She had become a catholic during her marriage and donated considerable sums to the church in Kyoto. When she died in 1963, some of her ashes were placed in a catholic plot on the grounds of Kinkakuji.

[floatl]Image[/floatl]The visit of the New York Philharmonic to North Korea has thrown up a new candidate for this thread. The main sponsor for the trip is Lady Yoko Nagae Ceschina who is the widow of an Italian business magnate. The Wall Street Journal says "Mrs. Ceschina, 75, inherited her title and her $190-million fortune from her late husband, Count Renzo Ceschina". A Japan Times piece earlier this month has a few more details:
Yoko Nagae Ceschina...is a Japanese philanthropist who has spent nearly half a century in Italy...Born in 1932 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Nagae Ceschina graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music before going to Italy in 1960 as Japan's first publicly funded student to the country since the end of the war. Nagae met her future husband, Renzo Ceschina, an extremely wealthy Milanese businessman, while studying the harp in Venice in 1962. The couple married in 1977. Nagae Ceschina spent a tumultuous decade after her husband died in 1982, being sued by his relatives over his inheritance. But after settling the bitter family feud, she decided to begin her charitable work to return her fortune to society.

However, things seem a little more colourful than that bare bones account. Renzo came across Yoko in a cafe and she moved in with him in 1962 although they didn't marry until 1977. Since other news reports suggest that it was his second marriage, it could be that she was his mistress for some years. They had no children. One Japanese account which calls her a traitor for giving credibility to North Korea, says that when Renzo died, Yoko produced a will which left his entire fortune to her. His nephew declared it a forgery and handwriting analysis supported his claim which led to her arrest. In the subsequent trial, however, she was found innocent which leads the Japanese writer to wonder if some money changed hands behind the scenes.

AFP: Cacharel gets new design duo
Away from the hullabaloo of the catwalk presentations of autumn-winter ready-to-wear fashion, an Anglo-Japanese couple are in Paris this week to promote their debut collection for the vintage French label Cacharel...The British duo Clements Ribeiro spearheaded a revival and now London and Toyko-based Mark Eley and Wakoko Kishimoto have taken on the mantle, at a time when 1970s nostalgia looks set to make a big comeback. Their appointment was all down to a loyal customer of their own label Eley Kishimoto, the French artist Sophie Calle, who also happens to be a friend of Cacharel's founder Jean Bousquet...more...

Roger Ver is a Convicted Felon, I'm glad he's not in my country!

Postby TFTW08 » Tue Apr 01, 2008 3:16 am

Mulboyne wrote:...American Roger Ver, who says he earns around 200 million yen a year, was featured explaining why Japanese girls were wonderful and why he wants to marry one. Apparently, they are less aggressive than American women and don't give him a hard time when he forgets to call. He has put the trailer for the show up on his MySpace page which you can see here. He's the one jumping on the bed.

The man seen "Jumping on the bed" is a convicted felon, he liked Japanese women because he can boss them around.

"According to Newsbytes, Roger Ver, 22, of San Jose, admitted to dealing in explosives without a license, illegally storing explosives and mailing dangerous explosive material in violation of postal regulations. His eBay auction offered for sale a miniature blasting device and accompanying explosives designed for use by farmers to kill crop-eating birds and rodents. He was sentenced to 10 months in prison, a fine of $2,000 and three years of probation."

Kimiko Date's annoucement that she will return to pro tennis reminded me that she is married to German racing driver Michael Krumm. Given that she was once ranked No.4 in the world and had the game to beat Graf and Navratilova, the balance of fame and money is clearly tipped in her favour but Krumm was once a Formula 3 champion in Japan so he just about qualifies for this thread.

She was pretty cute in the 90s and I was asked to teach her English. This came right after she "retired" from the tour. Why she waited until she had no real need to speak English to the press and whatnot to develop a desire to learn English, I'll never know. Despite the attractiveness of the gig, I had to turn it down since I was kind of burned out on Japan at that point and was determined to move to California. Sorry Kimiko! If I had stuck around, maybe she'd have been married to a gaijin a decade earlier!

Why did all you guys get offers to teach English to female J- stars, singers, athletes, talents, etc and the only people who wanted me to teach them English were a bunch of female aerobics and yoga instructors.....

on second thought...nevermind....jealousy over.
