Is it just me or are there a lot of eyepatches here? I can't recall EVER seeing anyone wearing an eyepatch who wasn't a pirate back home, but I see them all the time here.

Is there a higher incidence of pink eye or something?

The Japan Eyepatch Society funnels cash to the doctors.
"WOW! Your tonsils are quite inflammed! Here's an eyepatch!"
"He's going into cardiac arrest! Nurse, get a number 4 eyepatch! STAT!"

Anyone know of a serious reason? :p

I'll ask the eye doctor next time I go pick up contacts

Actually there was something on NHK in the last week about dodgy optometrists or something. A former employee was confessing to their past sins of faking diagnoses and prescriptions just to sell their product and not looking after customers who developed real eye problems from using contacts, etc. Sorry, I only caught part of it and have no idea how widespread it was alleged to be, but it was timely that you mentioned this.

Of course, the eye patches could always been related to September 19 - "Talk Like a Pirate Day".

I actually just started going to the optometrist here this year. I always used to just get stuff done when I went back home, but the prices are comparable (especially since I have no insurance back in the states anymore) so I figured it would be easier to buy stuff here than haul back a year or two supply of contacts from the states everytime I went back.

My optometrist is good though. No sales pitches or anything. There might be something about contacts though, because my optometrist won't give out a prescription for contacts, you have to order them through the optometrist, but they will give out a prescription for glasses so they can be purchased elsewhere (although I never bother).

The only real complaint I have is the horrendous waiting times, but next time I visit I will ask about the eyepatches. It's something I've always wondered about whenever I see them when I'm out, but I always forget later.

Mostly women that I see with them too.

Eye patches are a common therapy for "lazy eye" (Amblyopia) in young children.

Less talk, more pics. Okay?
