I tell you what, I have the deepest admiration for the English skills of the European blokes on this site. Remarkable! No shame in being corrected by Coligny (or you, Russell!) Indeed, I dip my lid to Take for his second language skills. He does well.
Mind you, the English skills of the average European reinforce to me that the multi-billion dollar Engrish business in Japan is one of the world's great swindles. And it speaks volumes of the disastrous aspects of a Japanese education system that teaches Engrish to people for 10 years and only a very, very few can carry a decent conversation.

As one of the local old timers I chat with once or twice a month calls it, the English education the government foists on the people here is a crime. He himself can get by in English, German, and Chinese, and is fluent in Japanese and Uchinaaguchi (he grew up with the later two, and taught himself the others by interacting with native speakers of those languages).
