A white face= American
Anyone over 18=you must be an English teacher or work for a foreign company
Broken Chinese=You must have studied Chinese before coming or you've lived in China for years
But at least there are no obvious same-sex attempts to check out, ahem, package size.
I've found a way to forestall the broken English onslaught, though, by immediately claiming to be German (profound apologies to any actual Germans). That curbs their attempts at broken English, though it invariably leads to a detailed discussion of how good German cars are. And to maintain my 'cover,' I've even had to research pricing info on German cars in Germany because sooner or later I'll be asked 'how much is such and such in your country?'

I dont know if you are trying to look cool cause you can write a whole lot of romaji, but you just look like the baka you are trying to call me. Put in a couple more years Japanese study before you start trying to post in it.
Either way, I could say the same thing to you. If you dont like seeing my complaints, dont read them.
I will take that liberty with your romaji posts in the future.
nobody knows whether you can read kanji or not.
if you post here, anybody is able to answer you and express a certain point of view
hakuman wrote:You guys are a bunch of whiners. These people are asking you these questions and making these statements to be friendly, and you are all hosttile about it. Suck it up, smile, and answer the question. If you dont like it, go home and quit whining.

She also didnt know if I could speak Japanese and that didnt stop her.if you post here, anybody is able to answer you and express a certain point of view
and I took that same liberty for myself.

You'd make a better citizen than me- I don't eat their food, drink their beer, hate soccer and german cars.
jingai wrote:I encourage you to stop asking gaijin the question about blood type. You'll have better success if you ask what their astrological "sign" is as people care more about this in America (don't know about Europe).

The blood donation is needed all over the world not only in Japan, so I want many people to contribute to it.
Please give your opinion on this.
FG Lurker wrote:It is similar to "horoscopes" in many western countries. Most people view horoscopes as being meaningless (or worse!), but there is a certain percentage of people who believe strongly in them. The majority of people who view horoscopes as meaningless tend to look at people who take them very seriously as being a bit (or a lot!) odd.
For me anyway, blood type deciding the type of person is pretty similar to a horoscope deciding the type of person. Trying to split the entire population into a small number of groups based on blood type or horoscope is impossible. Yet many people try to do this, and many people take it way to seriously.
I think that is why (or at least one reason why) many FGs roll their eyes at the "blood type" question.
maraboutslim wrote:Tomoko-san, most new gaijin will have no idea why you are asking their blood type so they will be confused. Those who know about Japanese society and the theory of blood type determining personality will likely react badly to the question because they will think you are trying to put them in a category before getting to know them. If they answer "type A", you'll think to yourself, "ah ha, now I know what kind of person they are...." They will feel offended because we believe that our personalities are things we can determine ourselves by our actions and that they change over time with our beliefs and experiences, and are not determined for us when we are born like our blood type is. Am I making any sense?
Mulboyne wrote:hakuman wrote:These people are asking you these questions and making these statements to be friendly
I think there is a definite difference between people asking a question to be friendly and people asking a question to reinforce a prejudice.

I'm happy to take advantage of the chance offered by someone being friendly but I have no problem being a slightly abrupt if I sense the latter motive.

Being an Rh neg myself I think it's great you are donating.

Gee, you're lucky. Even though I led my college's Red Cross blood drive for many years in the States, the Japanese Red Cross refuses my gaijin blood even though I have a Red Cross blood donor card.
Hey. Do any you you other FGs get refused or does the Japanese Red Cross just hate handicapped donors like me as I suspect?

Love ya girl.. get better OK!!
gomichild wrote:The Red Cross here have a lot of strict rules in place - they don't necessarily just discriminate against foreigners. The standards for donating are strict.
Definitely out if you are on any medication.
gomichild wrote:The inane questions annoy me because they are so standard - I appreciate it more when people talk to me like a person not as a "type of foriegner". I don't ask Japanese people if they wear kimonos or crap like that.
There are much more interesting things to talk about.
