Well... only a billion players if you're into switch-hitting. Otherwise you're stuck in one league or another.

China Leauge is nice.. it's technically illegal to be a switch hitter here :)

I envy you baseball players. Since my catcher caught the ball in her uterus, she has decided to take a leave from the league for about 9 months. As my batting services thereby are no longer asked for, I have been forced to resort to pocket ping-pong.

She holds the bat all wrong, so very very wrong, but was willing to take advice.

Ahhh, so you are training a rookie. Tried that it J-land for a while.
Some rookies just weren't meant for the big leagues and pressure from the head of the organization meant they had to be cut.
As the player-manager I was forced to take matters into my own hands for a while until some Free Agents and other experienced veterans were signed to one game contracts.
After a while the organization moved the scouting territory from Tokyo to the inaka where more promising rookies were located. One showed a lot of promise and professional attitude and was added to the team. So far the team has had a clean record with steroids and viagara.

My advice to all managers: mix the lineup up a bit with rookies and veterans to see who can really handle the pressure that big league ball will put on a player.

Well, the baseball season has been going good, very good. However, this weekend we are going to see the manager's friend and then she will know about the games we have been playing. Her managers don't know that she might be wanting to play a long game with the batter, and they might not be as cool to the idea as we were hoping. We have till about sunday to find a way. She will keep playing either way, but we don't want to piss them off with the announcement. 8O

I thought the C-League was like the J-League - where you don't meet the player's managers until the player's ready to sign a permanent contract.

Or is that where this is headed???

If so, watch out for the desinated hitter!

Well, for spring festival, there is a break in the season, and the catcher wants to go back to her clubhouse and bring the batter with her. She has played ball before, but never told her managers about it.

My only fear right now is that the catcher might want to change leagues at some point, I have done some scouting on that, and it seems unlikely, but the catcher seems to know about the scouts and is playing with their heads from time to time.

Oh, and the other fear is that her managers will kill me when they find out.

That's between the catcher and her managers. Doesn't involve you. If she's smart, she'll introduce you as her "friend". Play along.

YAY! She already did that!
Internet paid off big. When she first saw me on the school forum and we started talking to each other, her mom saw what i was saying and found me humorous. From advice so far... if I can win over the mom (not too hard) and her grandma (she's pretty cool actually), her dad should give in.

As long as they don't have to confront the issue now, then its okay. Friend of mine visited his girlfriend's parents for the first time in Okinawa. She introduced him as her boyfriend and all hell broke loose.

Fortunately for him, she choose him over Japan and the two of them chose a third country (South Africa!) to start a company.

You are already Hooked!!!

Parents will like the daughter's foreign devil boyfriend. They all do. They can brag to all their friends that they are the first on their block to have a handsome, humorous, rich, educated foreign devil of a son-in-law. I mean, isn't that much better than most of the loser eligible bachelor players in the Beijing and China Leagues?

They will look forward to coming to the states themselves someday where "the streets are paved with gold." Do I sound bitter? Old, single, brought the catcher's whole family over years ago and now I'm by myself???

PM your local number and the day/time you are supposed to travel. I will call a few hours before to sadly break the news that relative X has died and you must come to back to the states immediatly.
Should get you out of trouble at the last minute and still be able to play baseball.

Nah, that's the problem, I WANT to spend time with her, and I'll be damned if I am going on that 40 hour train ride alone. A month with her followed by coming back to campus and getting our own place off campus... I can deal with the parents if it comes to that.... just scary.

All good China League parents are either PHd's, MDs, or whatever. All good China League parents have either fought in a war, were Red Guards, were imprisoned, or better yet walked through the snow in freezing weather barefoot to school 10 miles each way everyday. I've heard it all before.

Yes, tell us more about this girl.

We are your fellow Gaijin brothers and some of us would like to know more about her. What makes her unique, what does she study and enjoy? How long have you known her? You might as well get it out..........you are in love big time.

I sincerely wish you the best of happiness with her, but just take it slow.

She was a tomboy growing up and she ended up being one of the ones that didn't go gay, so she's the best kind of girl ever. We are both linguistics nerds, she is a grad student here at beiwai in the Linguistics department, we are both weird, too weird. We actually share the same sense of distorted humor, and she isn't typical Han at all. She is from an area with a lot of minorities, and she has an uncommon last name. She will not get defensive if asked if she is a minority, she will say yes and mimic them... so cool. She's not PC at all, and will speak her mind on just about everything. We can talk politics, religion, anything, and no one gets upset or argues... just discuss and we both find it fun. Speaks fluent Chinese, Sichuanhua, Xichanghua, English, and French. She is also trying to learn some Japanese even though she hates Japan... simply because it's my secret language from her right now. She is so damned open and cool about everything. And I am pretty sure that she has fallen for me more than I have fallen for her. Oh, and to top it off, she definitely wants to stay in China, hehe. Love this girl.

cstaylor wrote:Since they live in a city area, I take it she's the only child?

Well, actually she is from a town outside the city that has about 20-30,000 people and yep, only child. I think I found my "in" for this situation. I have a fun little hobby of collecting and watching the old propaganda movies. I have about 70-80 of them now at my disposal in a binder that is full. If I bring this with me, and her parents see that I have them, they will love me. Then I have to watch horrible Korean soaps with the mom, and get drunk with dad... I can win them over, I hope.

Oh and taking it slow.... we tried, we really tried, and we slowed it down a little, but we had our 2-week anniversary. Went to see Mao and make out in front of him. Made out on Tiananamen behind the backs of about 10 guards, made out in the Underground City, and ended up at a hotel. If her parents see the casualties from our hickey war.... god, they will kill me.

Sounds like you have met someone who is unique and compatible.

When did you say you are going to "Meet the Parents?"

Hope that won't cause the game to be called.

Eh, been going out for 2 weeks, we have gotten to know each other since about June/Julyish. We are both kinda scared and have been rushing into things, tealling each other stuff that should be freaking a normal person out and scaring them away, but it has been having the exact opposite effect on us. Everything has just sorta happened, dunno why or how exactly.

Pitchers should be careful about signing long term contracts that will tie them to a single catcher. Having a variety of catchers over one's career, especially the early part, helps bring out the talents of the pitcher and helps them develop into an All Star. The same may be true for catchers as well, though in general, catchers are designed to seek a single long term pitcher to play with. Pitchers, on the other hand, are designed to play the field and therefore should carefully examine any potential contracts, assuring there is an opt-out clause that can be exercised at any time.
