been re-reading the thread. i was under the impression that the ancient egyptians had concrete and used it to build the pyramids.

as for japanese inventions, i think true japanese inventions are a lot harder to come by than japanese refinements or improvements to existing things. hfcs (high fructose corn syrups) were invented i think in the u.s. but refined by japanese researchers in the 70s.

it just seems that there is a plethora of examples like this but for the most part it jseems to be the west doing the fundamentals.

Folded steel swords?

Actually, probably not even that... since most swords had some sort of folding as part of their forging.

Although I do think the Japanese sword is probably one of the more significant Japanese contributions to art, science, and technology.

I forgot all about this thread until today. I realized this important Japanese invention should be referenced here, since some people may not yet be aware of it.

Well that is at least better than the manual method of putting ones mouth over and sucking....(seriously, my first wife was convinced by her mum that it must be done or the baby could die...nutter)

the greatest sexual fetishes ever imagined. I truly believe if it wasnt for the massive amount of J-porn I went through as a kid (9 and up) I wouldnt be the sick perverted school girl loving bestiality craving ropes and wooden horses using sadistic asshole I am today. When all else fails and its just me and my hand, I know I can always find a good japanese doujinshi of a demon tentacle graping some poor girl who seems just a little too quick to put it in her mouth.

I freaked when I saw this after the wifey brought it home, but it did sure help our little girl when her nose was running like my arse after using too much of that tasty Vietnamese hot sauce on my mabo tofu...

Kimekime, if you like that invention, we have a whole dedicated thread to it. Spray Toilets (Oh How I Miss A Clean Anus)

P&G Open to Outside Ideas, but No Kitty Swiffers

P&G Open to Outside Ideas, but No Kitty Swiffers
AP, January 1, 2010
[floatr]Image[/floatr]Swiffer kitties? Just attach little dusting pads to your felines' paws, so they can help keep your floors clean while making their rounds.

A bit farfetched? Executives at consumer-products king Procter & Gamble Co. thought so, too, and sent the idea to the discard pile.

[...]

But there are success stories, too. The original Swiffer duster was developed by a Japanese company that P&G teamed up with to take it global.

(Full Story)

Who knew? Probably (more than?) a few other items around like this too -- invented in Japan but not known as such.

Found out today that Seiko was the first company to market a quartz watch, the Seiko 35 SQ Astron in 1969. They didn't invent everything that went into it but they did contribute a lot of R&D to make it possible. They were also the first company to use lower power CMOS chips in quartz watches.

Seiko still does quite a bit of innovating, like their new spring drive movement with a 72 hour power reserve and way higher accuracy than any other self-winding watch on the market. Prices start around $4500 and go to around $10k I believe. Seiko also has some super high end watches with price tags north of $100k. Who knew?

According to Encyclopedia Brittanica's list of great inventions (not all of them necessarily great) Japan has invented ...

almost nothing. The things Japan is given credit for are largely merely extensions or consumer marketing of fundamental developments by others.

I guess no Japanese want to set off the independent or creative thought alarms.

If Japanese "inventors" are anything like my students, I can see why Japan hasn't invented much. They have to go around and get the consensus of everyone around them before they speak up with an idea, but lose confidence too quickly and give up.
