Ouch - odaiji ni.

I was at the hospital myself a few weeks ago. I found myself in need of a doctor at midnight one night as I had developed a chest infection and my breathing sounded like Darth Vadar. So managed to get to the closest on-call hospital.

Doc decided I needed some nebulizer action and so hooked me up to this damned contraption.

Image

This thing was freaky.. it was seriously held together with tape and needed to be propped up on a chock at the back to keep the power cord in.

But it did the job and I was able to breathe again. But it certainly wasn't flash.

BTW this is me at the hospital not looking or feeling my best. I have the said nebulizer in my mouth. As you can see from the time stamp, it is 2am and I am in my jarmies and sick as a dog.

This is screaming for a decent caption.

Thanks GG

Yep, ancient temples and shrines with modern skyscrapers right next to them are one thing...but ancient technology in a hospital is...well, TIJ :wall:

I froogled arm sling and found decent arm slings as cheap as what they charged me for this ghetto rig. Then the counter was, "if you wore that in Japan, it would look fake and noone would believe that you're hurt."

I'm quite worn out with these bullshit... to the point I immediatly blow a fuse...

Pediatric nurses took 30 minutes for a blood draw once... clothes were splattered... I made myself quite (un)popular that day calling back the chief "Dr Zaius" asking him to send back the nurse to Manchouria in the chinese prisonner camp were she certainly previously worked...
Back from Korea with a food poisonning left the Seoul University hospital to notch care to be confronted with a japanese hobo in a white coat moonlighting as a doc. The difference in professionnalism was so appaling that I was rendered speechless (not an exactly common state with me, I tend more toward the fountain of profanity in more languages than you can dub on a DVD release). Also the case of the lying docs keep me still with a little death wish for these fucktards. You ask if everything is fine they tell you yes, then on the scheduled evening meeting they tell you that everything is as fucked as can be. But just some name dropping, no explanation on consequences or scale of appreciation... thanks internet for the help instead...

All that being for the customer side... the backroom talks are much scarier... Especially the screwups from the private clinics that get transfered to the city hospital. 3 typhoons ago me b... was on reserve duty... We receive the call around midnight. Had to drive her in the middle of the storm that ended up cutting power in the whole town. A private clinic from Toyokawa was hanging to a patient in really bad shape until too late... then they transfered her to the local municipal hospital who immediately understood it was out of their league, so she was transferred again here... all that shit with most bridges closed and trees flying across the roads... Patient arrived hald dead with massive blood loss, blood supply took 3 hours to come from the blood bank... Problem... when her status started to deteriorate the weather was rainy but still perfectly safe for a quick transfer.
(In that storm we made the news as the Mikawa Harbour was so badly hit that containers were thrown around like plastic toys and few trucks ended on the side while crossing the Toyogawa bridge)

Hopefully the vets are top notch. The actual one can do an injection to Lanxade without her even noticing. It's a cat so insane that she attacks you if you breath to loudly behind her back.

Dude, I had exactly the same experience when I dislocated my shoulder about 11 years ago. I went to one of the big hospitals in Tokyo with English speaking doctors thinking it would be better and they gave me that first-aid kit cloth sling. After about a day of using it my neck hurt worse than my shoulder. I called around and found a clinic that sold slings. The doctor told me the other place probably didn't offer me one because they aren't covered by national insurance. I think it cost me 3000 yen and change.

When the doc brought the sling out is was too small even though it was adult one size fits all (he said it was unfortunately Japanese one size fits all). I'm only 173 cm tall and at the time weighed 78 kg (5'8", 172 lbs to my fellow Mercans). Not exactly skinny but not an unbelievable size for Japan. It was just big enough I could use it and it was better than the giant white handkerchief but it was still uncomfortable.

By the way, did they X-ray your good shoulder also to compare with the injured one? I've had that happen to me twice here. Fucking witch doctors.

I've noticed they still have the old school plaster casts in Japan too. I don't think I've seen one of those in the US since the 80s.

I've seen those, too...completely un-graffitied. I believe that it is illegal in the US to not have your plaster cast (not to be confused with a "plaster caster") written upon by your friends.

I had a cast when I broke my wrist 10 years ago but only until the next day when I could get in to see the specialist and after it was pinned and plated I had the haafu-cast on made from fibreglass or whatever they make them from. The actual surgery was first class but the pain management consisted of "suck it up whitey".

At 172cm and 75kg, I'm nearly your size...and I fit into most J-men's "L-size" clothes here so that sling must have been one size fits all for kids. My neck is red and just like yours, it is hurting me more than my shoulder. Some J-people I know that are well traveled have pretty much said, "Japanese medical technology is 30~40 years behind because of the National Health Insurance." They then went on to mention what Coligny and my friend who operates a vet here have said...if you want the latest medical technology, you'll find more of it at your local vet than at any hospital here. Also, not sure if he x-rayed my other shoulder for comparison, they took two x-rays but I thought they were both of the same shoulder...going back next week for a follow up, will question him about that.

No way I can play in tonight's crucial game, have more movement and the pain is subsiding but the doc said another blow to my shoulder while it's healing would turn it to a type 2 or worse situation...not being able to shoot or make/take a hit means I'm worthless on the ice....and to top it off, my 18yo lemur is in town to watch  Guess I get to suit up, skate around in warm ups, and then sit on the bench for the rest of the game. :(

Trust me, don't even do that. Take it very easy. Call around to some of the international clinics. They may have slings available and it probably won't cost you more than 5000 yen. I had level 1 or whatever dislocation too and it still acts up from time to time. Been fucked for the past two weeks because of take down training I did at the dojo last month.

Note: I WAS 78 kg. As SDH can tell you, I've beefed up a bit in recent years ;).

That risky? I figure as long as it's immobilized, I'm good. Not planning on any puck handling or shooting, just the warm up skate and then straight to the bench.
