Back when I was first here as a student in the 80's, I'd read something in one of Jack Seward's books about red dogs being considered to be the tastiest during the hard times after the war. I mentioned it to a friend, who said no way. We had good laugh, and it became a running joke. Then we went to visit her granny in deepest darkest Saga. One evening we saw a red dog and joked about it. Granny said yes indeed they really are tastier.

More of that goes on the Pops will admit!
The Nagoya area and some places on the Japan sea side have some unusual donburis that you won't find on a Yoshinoya menu!

Mayo on pizza is one of the better Japanese twist on western foods.

I just love the ebi mayo or the teriyaki chicken mayo pizzas from Pizza La.

after spending too much time with the Japanese exchange kids, I've begun to enjoy mayo on all kinds of rice and noode dishes. I feel like I'm betraying everything I know.

That's fine, but I draw the line at pizza.

I took one of my friends to a swank fish restaurant in Aoyama for his birthday. His favorite dish was shirako. After eating about 6 helpings and drinking 4 or 5 big boys of Ebisu we told him that he was basically doing an aquarium 'Rod Stewart'. To which point he promptly puked all over the table.

Flashback a few years to Hokkaido when the homeys decided that something chicken this way come and we ate the salmonella sushi. No amount of incohol in my gut could neutralize it. Was a horrible flight back to Tokyo. And even more horrible on the taxi back home. I'll never forget it. After living for years in East LA and eating from every roach coach that came by, I've never had such a bad case of the 'doubles'. I'll take a dog burrito any day.
See you in PyonPyang!
