Living With My J-Girlfriend...The Rollercoaster

I've been attached now for 4-5 years, and it has been a rollercoaster. We argue, and that is life. What if you never argued? That would be seriously freakish... I mean it would mean that
A.) you either agree on everything, which coming from different cultures would obviously be strange or unprecendented.
B.) You don't want to argue so you willfully try not to argue by suppressing your true and innate feelings...
C.) You don't talk because you hate each other.
D.) You never see each other because you work conflicting schedules.
E.) some or all of the above.

One thing I have come to terms with is that she helps make me better by bringing into my life some of what she has learned, experienced, and values from her culture, and I do the same to her. Regardless if you believe that or not, it is true.

The other thing I noticed that is tough is religious, political, and social beliefs are difficult to mix when they are at totally different ends of the spectrum. I and my wife are having a stroke of a time dealing with that... as she is a severe liberal, and I am a liberal-conservative, who leans more towards the conservative when in the hot-seat...

But lately she lets slip that she is a conservative deep down, in some respects, and I am a looney liberal in other respects...

In fact we just had an arguement over who discriminates more, Japanese people or American people, and we compare our experiences about living abroad, as she lived in the states for about 3-4 years, and I have lived in Japan for 1-2 years.

We discussed that for a while until she told me to shut up... then she got on the internet and looked for ways to fix our marriage LOL

Oh the tales I could tell...

Arguing is healthy and makes you bond more, as long as it is constructive... Try to make it constructive if it is not.

I went out 3 years with a Japanese girl. She was first in Tokyo then moved to the US. We would meet almost every weekend. She hated Japan because of how women are treated there. She hated the US because she was constantly being discriminated against but still wnats to live in the US at all cost. Anyway, we had so many arguments that we ended up breaking up. The sources of our arguments were funny at times but we always managed to argue. The majority were based on a naive Japanese culture of looking after others before you look after yourself. In my book my family's interest comes before anyone else. She thought I was selfish. I ended up hating her and calling her what American Oyaji sama says "fucked-up in the head".

Regardless though. Now I am madly in love and getting married to a Japanese girl this summer. I think I found one that is not "fucked-up" yet.

That's a pretty silly thing to argue about. Obviously the two of you aren't discriminating (at least against each other), so who cares about everyone else?

"You COULD be right"

"Most interesting"

"I just can't believe it, but if you say so, then I guess I should"

Something that works for me is attack the idea and not the person.

IE instead of "You are stupid" or "you are crazy"
try "That's a dumb idea" or "that's a crazy idea"

Sounds like the same thing but it doesn't make the other person feel as defensive.

I think the disconnect was that I had been assuming you had some level of taste. I think you are a lot like the guy who runs the website called something like "girls I have done." But I will tell you that a "normal" guy can easily pick up a girl on the street and after having become close friends (maybe after several dates) she will likely allow him to photograph her in the nude and in the act.
