Copy paste copy past copy paste...

I still don't get how the comic gaijin mask, what most reasonable people find tasteless, is "self depreciating humor."

.

I have one fear...

That self deprecating means a glorious son of Yamato humiliating himself by masquerading as a dirty barbarian foreigner...

This or they are admitting they are inbred dumbfucks hicks only able to view the rest of the world through stupid racist simplistic cliches thrown at them like vegetables scrap to pigs enjoying wrestling in the mud... Derp derp look'a'me I'm'a a fureigners, dem all have big noose...

The stink about this was so huge that it even showed up on a number of major overseas news outlets. I saw it on two Australian newspapers websites: The Age and The Australian.

ANA really shot themselves in the ass with this one.
(They also demonstrated that they have no idea what "self-deprecating" means.)

But ... if a few incidents like this don't go high profile and cause serious problems for the perp., there's no way the attitudes are going to change. So good. Maybe the message will gradually get through.

Does Save Spector own some of the blame for this though? With his bleach blonde hair and blue contacts, he is perpetuating the idea of gaijin as this stereotypical model.

Change a few words around and the same could be said by the ethnic Asians in the US about the stink they raised about the TV show. Is that protest now justified?

My personal position is that the ANA ad is very poorly executed, unclear about what it wants to tell the viewer. All advertising needs to be notable in some respect to have an impact. It may be notable for being cute, notable for being annoying or notable for causing a controversy. That last is a risky strategy, and I'm not sure that an airline wants a reputation of being "edgy," (except Air New Zealand seems to be doing that OK) but it is getting the ad talked about in the foreign press more than it would otherwise. I don't watch TV so I can't say but has anyone seen it other than on youtube? The proportion of viewers in the broadcast market who see it and feel legitimately offended may be small enough to ignore, and the number of feigned offended, bored and ready to join in any campaign which looks like it is sticking the boot in to the man, may be enough to increase the name recognition of ANA. A risk, but maybe a calculated one.

But I really think that ANA looks stupid for airing the ad, and they will do more harm to themselves by continuing to run it. Not because they are offending people, but because it looks immature.

Personally I've become kind of numb to this kind of silliness. Or maybe I was never that sensitive to it. It doesn't really bother me, at least as far as the look and accent goes. What does bother me is when foreigners are portrayed as being clumsy, insensitive, and clueless. That happens quite a bit, but the ANA ad in question doesn't even come close. To be perfectly frank I find it kind of funny. The "You want a hug?" ... "such a Japanese reaction" is kinda cute. However, ANA should have known that in the current global PC climate they'd get a load of shit for that. A serious lack of foresight on their part.

I can understand why some people might be offended, but with respect for the feelings of those who are ... I'm not.

It's just silly.

I guess this is a good way of putting it. You see some dork in Shibuya with that shit on, think he's an idiot, but just keep walking. If that rains on your day, you've got issues. A major international airline putting someone in that shit for a TV commercial and claiming the message they want to send by it is they want Japanese citizens to travel abroad and become greater players on the “global stage” just shows how out of touch they are with the "global stage" and "immature." (and also sends the message that comically parodying foreigners is acceptable)

I just wish somebody would correct the HUGE spelling error in the form reply.

Self-depreciating? What like the Yen?

Self-deprecating... there is no "i" in team... or sumfink like this.

/grammar nazi

But the dictionary bot in me is just bothered by the whole misuse of the word - typo's notwithstanding. The humour (lame as it is) is NOT self-deprecating as it is poking fun at foreigners. Self-deprecating is poking fun at yourself.

A list of headwords is not subject to copyright but the definitions are scholarly work.

The definition of a word may be a fact, but the expression of that fact may involve considerable creative work

Blatantly lifting this from Debito's blog activism HQ.
ANAHanedaHibiyapic012214-1024x768.jpg

Now if they had kept it at this level throughout and scaled down the caricature, they would have more respect. I think this is rather a fun collection of transformations.

They aren't bad at all. But why is a Londoner supposed to dress like that?

Cos Dick Van Dyke is so British...

He was brilliant in Mary Poppins though - well other than the times he opened his mouth.

But back on topic - how else would you dress as a Londoner? A bobby? Royal Guard? Sherlock Holmes? Elton John?

To match the other types, I think the standard would be Pearly Kings/queens. No idea how recognisable that is in Japan.
But these days - Polish National dress?

Russian oligarch or jobbing Eurotrash. It freaked me out the last time I was there - all the retail/service staff I dealt with seemed to be young Europeans. And the "bobbies" carry submachine guns.
