While we are on that topic, I ran out of KY one night and I had nothing else, so with a little imagination, I found that lathering up with a bar of the yellow stuff worked wonders.

Fuck this for a reason to allow imports!
The ministry decision came as a butter shortage was feared to affect the manufacturing of Christmas cakes that starts in autumn.

The Japan Dairy Industry Association ... estimates that the butter market will shrink from 83.9 billion yen to 12.6 billion yen due to a decrease in the unit price should TPP be implemented.

They might be claiming that domestic participants will leave the industry and domestic production will decrease, but I wish they would say that expressly if that is the case. Otherwise, since they are putting the decrease in market value size down to the decrease in unit price alone, what they are saying is that with TPP butter will be less than one sixth of current prices. Way to get the general population to say "Fuck TPP!"

I ended up having to buy a big block of some kind of "premium" butter that costs about 40% more than regular butter. But at least I got my hands on some real butter. I won't eat margarine. I'd rather spread Vaseline on my toast. By the way, why the fuck does unsalted butter cost more than salted butter in Japan?

I'll bake with margarine but that's about it. The wife hates it when I buy real butter because of the cost. She's frugal... probably why her family is loaded. But to hell with it I want an English Muffin with butter by god!

Salted butter lasts much longer than unsalted so it is easier to store/warehouse to handle times of shortage. That is, salted butter has a longer shelf life than unsalted butter and unsalted butter is generally considered to be a fresher (and therefore a more expensive) product.

I've seen some fermented butter at the local bulk store that goes for an extra 100 yen per pound, and that's the one that's available the longest in times of shortage.

Actually the extra expense of Japan"s unsalted butter has many angles:

-- Unsalted butter does not keep as well as salted AND unsalted butter is a low volume/turnover item in Japan, which both make it more expensive.
---The Japanese government manipulates the butter market by keeping supplies of Japanese butter during seasonal abundances in storage (and salted butter stores better thus it is preferred).
-- Retail sales of unsalted butter are low because it is used for baking (Japanese homes seldom have real ovens) and cooking (Japanese don't eat butter-ladden entrées). Basically, only wealthier Japanese housewives with more money than brains buy unsalted butter---so overcharging is easy.
---Everyone in the dairy industry are lazy fucks---farmers, dairies, quasi-governmental dairy co-ops, retailers, and most of all the evil Ministry of Agriculture.

And salted-butter acts as a more effective agent to enable the correct mouth position for teeth-sucking...one would hate to create confusion in the marketplace. :smoking:

Because Japanese infants are trained on salted butter for that "correct mouth position for teeth-sucking," the majority of Japanese think unsalted butter doesn't taste good*.
*Poorly educated folks crave salted butter and hate unsalted, both in Japan and America.

Feck. Down here in Okinawa there's nary a pat to be had, salted or otherwise. Lovely place, shame about the food and the produce. And the fat polynesians.

Not mentioned yet, but there is another reason why salted butter is cheaper than unsalted: salt is cheaper per unit weight than butter, so you pay less for the few grams of salt than when that would be butter...

Local high end market was sold out of everything except one tiny block of "fermented butter" for 1398円....I ventured to the run of the mill market and the only butter left was some overpriced "mini pack" individually packaged 8g bits. Haven't seen shelves so empty since 3/11 Bought two boxes of the "mini packs."

BTW, noticed some of the "corn soft" and margarine boxes have new BUTTER Taste advertising on them. Talk about sheisty advertising!!

I can't even find any of the ripoff minipack ones. Is this another example of the homeland marginalising the Okinawan majority?

Last week the Missus and I started to hoard the stuff.

We have now more than 1 kg in the fridge, which should be sufficient for the time being.

Got fed up with the situation, so when we saw an opportunity to buy lots of it, we couldn't resist.

Feels like living in a Communist country. And it's just that they want to protect farmers who have already been dead for years...

What's with all the butter stuff anyways? Has everyone here turned so old that they are making cookies for the grandkids? I doubt I use up a pad in less than a couple of months. At any rate, a quick perusal of the local super didn't show any lack of butter, but we do have cows here, so it must be a regional thing.

People that don't eat butter are usually fags. Out of curiosity, though, what do you use in its stead?

If you say margarine, there will be blooooooooood ;)

Yeah, but Olive Oil is fairly limited in its applications. Its great for Guido and Stavros food, obviously, but butter is a basic food group. I always slip a touch in even with Japanese rice. Butter = Better.

Or am I doing it wrong? As an example, butter toast in the morning; there is no way in hell I am Guido'ing for breakfast. It's bitter and doesn't spread properly. So, concrete tips would be welcome.

Note how I tied in concrete and Italian food products............................

You could always put yoghurt on your bread instead of butter...
