It only takes the slightest bit of digging to find that when it comes to meat consumption in proportion of vegetables, fruits and grains, NZ, Greece, Australia and the US are all on top of the list... Japanese meat consumption has increased as has consumption of fast/instant foods since post war recovery/modernisation, but my experience in Japan has lead me to believe that the Japanese tend to eat more vegetables generally.

Well, infomercial stats are suspect but they were talking about volume of veggies eaten in a day not proportion as compated to meat. And who knows what was being counted. If they were counting things like fries and corn chips as veggies then it could be true. Regardless, it seems to me that the Japanese don't eat much in the way of fresh veggies.

Ive seen that infomercial too. I would hazard to guess that the main bulk of the vegtable intake in the States would be potatoes, including fried.

It shits me no end the whole "in America everybody eat a very big steaki and keeki".

No you wanker, in the dining room at your hotel everybody eats a big steaki because big hotels like that buy prime rib in massive bulk and sell it at a fairly reasonable price.

You can try saying "everyone in Japan eats sushi everyday" but they never get it.

In any case if western food caused bad breath why dont we have such terrible breath?

I think yakitori's avatar is a good visual representation of what the average ojisan's breath is like.

I knew that smell was familiar, but could not name it. Yes, ! Yes indeed !
It is none other than " the rotting flesh of rats anus" ?
Big B I think you've identified it! Kudos
Today on the subway I was convinced it was " the rotting flesh of rats
anus breath day" here in Japan.
There are celebratory competitions, you know, at
ones local shrine.
A real family participation event. Sign gramps up,
he will be happier than a rat with a rotted anus. No doubt hell get lots
of applause from the crowd too, and maybe a kiss, from this years
"rotted flesh of rats anus breath" Queen! Yummy
My olfactory senses have been traumatized by this morning ride in
on the train. Ye ol' nose is on full alert to avoid a recurance of the event

Some of the later Godzilla movies were made as a protest against this death breath, by having Godzilla shoot some strange halitosis rays out of his mouth which would cause everything it hit to blow up and burst into flames.

After being here a while, I really think it is shitty toothpaste, lack of flossing and mouthwash use... Almost none of the Japanese people I know, that when asked about flossing never do... I sometimes check at friends places to see if they have floss.

I think that leaves chunks of food lodged between the teeth especially toward the back.. contributing to the stink.

Here is my theory:

Rice (grains) in the Japanese diet + inadequate flushing/drinking fluids after a meal [re: gargling is an effective counter-measure] ===> tonsil stones aka tonsilloliths

Tonsil stones often look like rice grains

And, contain hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercapten which makes them smell like ass.

In reviewing this thread it is apparent that the causes of Rotted Flesh of Rat Anus Breath
RFORAB, have been duly identified both anecdotally and with a scientific references.
Action is needed. Action, to put a stop to the
cruel olfactory assaults, promulgated upon others, inspiring antisocial tendencies
in the populace.
Proposal: A nation wide program to put those fellows standing gaurd at banks and
such with their taser wands, to better use. To subdue and immobilize
those who engage in these heinous RFORAB assaults. After said immobilization, a quick response
team be dispatched to the scene, where immediate cleansing of the offenders
oral cavity ( and any other malodorous body part) commences.
(submissions as to method and metrics to monitor effectivity anyone?)

Thereby leaving the offender, cleansed, enlightened as to his offense,
and inoffensive, at least in the olfactory sense.
