I can see where you are coming from actually, but don't take things the wrong way, also note that the people here, on the whole have helped a hell of a lot of people (most of who ended up as regulars here) and there have been so many trolls and repeat/lame posts/flames that people are bound to get tired of it

as to your main point (not the shit slinging bit - thats been covered already)

though it may come off as harsh (the general advice) it could save a lot of people lurking/reading a lot of money/heartache/stress

I was a freeter for 18 months or so (currently undergoing a course of psychiatric treatment, although not taking the antidepressants+tranqs they said I should take, so feel free to dismiss anything I say)

I came over to Japan all of a sudden (due to my parents in law not being in the best of health) and as I earnt a pretty good salary in rondon hadnt really bothered picking up any skills relavant to Japan (apart from the spoken language) and hence the only choice where I lived was eikaiwa , tho with luck, I ended up working with kids which was bloody excellent fun actually and I earnt enough to pay the bills and live, but not much else (took about 15 months to finally get my mind around living there) I could have earnt more, and almost certainly will when we go back there (am working on some qualifications now) I asked about what was possible for me (I am a first class researcher and very good at training people and have a lot of experience working with vip's but that wasnt usefull where I lived) and received good solid no bullshit responses from the people here.

What you might want to consider is that quite a few people here on FG have "made it" either through a good solid education, a good business plan and an ability to adapt or just plain good connections and a bit of good luck

What you won't see here (at least I never have done) is snobbery

There are unemployed people here, kids teachers, nova slaves, going up to people working for corps or own their own business, the common thing is a love/continuing fascination (albeit often a love/hate thing) with Japan and a desire to communicate with people who want to do something with their experiences/knowledge and to bounce ideas about, receive constructive criticism and naturally to vent their frustrations about Japan and the everyday absurdities.

I don't agree with the clique thing, its just that a good few people here who live down south happen to meet up now and again so naturally there would be a closer affinity..

Japan can make one feel very isolated and frustrated especially when you see other foreigners on tv or on the street who are successfull in decent jobs or married to money, whereas you find yourself doing a job which may be driving you crazy, all I can say is either keep studying here and make the best of what skills you have, or see your time in Japan at the moment as holiday and research time, and go home and improve yourself, save some money so on your return you can give making a real go of it here your best shot.

There were periods when I went through hell in Japan and nobody ever flamed me or heaped shit on me here, someone even offered me a place to stay for a while and chill out in Thailand.. Someone else even offered me a can of deodorant when I posted about being embarrased about japanese deodorants not covering up my sweat during classes when I first arrived.

What I`m trying to say is, I guess, you`ll never find a forum with people as honest, varied and talented as FG.

I`ve ranted enough, and probably bored you to tears, I hope you weren't trolling and get to be a regular here!..As I have put in a few (stupid )flames of my own in the past:

"there are good people here, this is the best Japan related forum. "

One's "Trollness" takes time to prove so I think people should always give new poster the benefit of the doubt. Are his charges that FG is unhelpful to newbies accurate? At times, I noticed a briskness to newcomers (and though it is understandable given that the number of people whose primary interest seems to be Anime) that often give the impression of cliquishness.

Dont like it, Fix it....

Postby kansaiboy » Fri Sep 03, 2004 1:54 am

u can make it anywhere....all u need is the desire....

I can tell u, I have lived and worked in Hong Kong, The Philippines, New York, Kuwait, and Korea.... all in IT engineering field... But not wanting to work 12 hours a day and be on call all the time, i took a cushy teaching job in Korea and actually enjoyed the change in lifestyle... so much so, I worked part time as a DM and Bar Tender just for the hell of it...

Now Im not trying to give u my resume, but what i am trying to show is that anywhere u go, focus and if u really wanna make it, then u will. No one can stop you.. I dont care if u wanna be a businessman, snack bar host, lawyer or enrish teacher, doesnt really matter as long as u love doin it right...or it gives u the chance to work on other things in ur spare time that a regular 9-5 job wouldnt.

u asked for advice...right...my advice, believe in yourself......

you could even work on a side line business like they have done with this site...

did u know it takes approx 24-48 hours to build a site like this from scratch...? ( 90% of that time is for the DNS tables to propegate for the new domain name) you could build ur own site, offer ur advice and opinions, and hopefully a couple of people could troll there and get hooked...after all thats what trolling is about, baiting new people to the site.....

Oh. And by the way.

Young Dudes is a cool site. As is this one.
The functionality here far exceeds Young Dudes tho.

You've got it all figured out, except that you're completely wrong as far as FG is concerned.

ah give me a break, did i touch a nerve...sorry. Didnt mean to. who cares about your motivations for putting up the site. I dont... It has a good domain name, not a bad backend but what I am explaining is that it isnt that hard to do...so if u he doesnt like it, then maybe Brianh can build his own....

I never said I didnt like ur site UG.

I think somebody framed the issue in this thread correctly by asking whether FG is unhelpful to newbies.

I admit I'm not the friendliest guy when it comes to newbies, but I think any comments I make are not only helpful and honest, they're grounded in real world experience. What I don't like are anime freaks and wannabe youngdudes who view Japan as nothing other than a playground and think they can just jump off the plane and live a fantasy life.

Brianhh, sorry you don't like the advice you're getting. You're welcome to abandon FG. By the way, my job offer still stands. I'll even throw in the mop for free.

That's fair comment and it is the way a lot of people make it here. But not everyone has unlimited drive no matter how much energy you have when you start. It's good to develop some plan or skills to fall back on. I don't think posters here are actively trying to dissuade people from coming to Japan, just trying to inject a bit of realism. I don't know why it is but I've got friends who have tried their hand and failed in countries like Australia, Vietnam and HK but they don't seem to be anything like as disillusioned with those countries overall compared with the ones I know who have had similar problems in Japan. It's possible, of course, that I'm just more alert to to the disappointment of the guys with Tokyo experiences.

In all fairness have u seen asiaxpat, especially related to HK.? Wow, that is one messed up site. Newbies get slammed really hard...usually by the same couple of posters who r washed out critters not able to find jobs... I used to post to that site a little, offering advise as I had a set up job in country... FG kicks the shit out of that site by far. I also agree, YD is targeted at a different demographic than FG and u are more likely to get some good views here... u may not like it but it is straight. Someone told me once "If u dont like it, fix it".... Thats what im saying... but be careful with ur spelling and enrish or u may get killed on that here... I did..

If I didnt like FG i woulnt feedroll it on my site "UG".....Love and Peace to all.

btw anyone wanna buy a boogie board....hehehe just jokes...

back to the topic at hand

Postby Oradea » Fri Sep 03, 2004 11:50 pm

boy, you guys went way off track...

It is true that the stupid and the ugly from the west can come here and be succesful without batting a testicle....

I have the skillz and the know how, but when I came here 4 years ago, and up until this very day, it seems that my employers just do not want me to use my skils.......They want me to follow their lil plastercine role model, leave them damn brains at home boy...
