200V is mostly for industrial appliances like high power lasers, restaurant fridge, and AC. It's supposed to be cheaper per volt than 100V but if you have no use for it, I would tell the electric company to unplug it and discontinue using it.

'Tokyo Disneyland/Sea' is 92.5% Japanese owned, who cares?

Any bets that Disneyland/Sea had "disruption of business" insurance?
I guess is that they using this historically low-attendance for repair, remodeling and installing a 60% efficient co-generation power plant.

Many rides were still running since it first opened 25+ years ago with minor upgrades and fixes here and there but probably nothing to improve the overall power consumption.

You would think that a facility of that size would be generating its own power...

Add Disney to the failed company list in this earthquake disaster.

Buddy's wife works for Disney. Apparently the liquefaction was pretty brutal. I suspect the "power saving" might be a bit of spin to make themselves look good while they try and figure out how the hell to fix the park.

Yep. In the winter it's because my wife and here parent's refuse to use the energy efficient air conditioner heat and instead use those 800w space heater bastards, combined with 2 pretty much constantly running pcs and other electronics.

I have 2 pcs and 2 raids running pretty much constantly myself, then there's my wife's pc (broken in quake along with one of mine).

But its the damn heaters mostly.

Our gas bill is like 20,000 a month too because everyone here except me takes baths and they refill 2 tubs everyday day or two and reheat the water several times a day

Also no blackouts today leaves me with mixed feelings, at least the blackouts should result in lower electric bills. :D

Yeah... aboot that...

First... there is at least 2 aircon that are 200v only, the former waiting room one (now dad TV/go room) one in the former operation room (now my workshop, never use aircon there anymore, power tools so hungry that I prefer to limit the load). But since they are not used in winter i'm pretty sure it's the fire protection and alarm system. All room have smoke and fire detectors, all level have those red light with alarm bell and "big red panic button" and also the stairs have magnetically retained emergency blast doors. When power is on and without alarm all doors stay open sort of locked by a magnet. When we lose the 100v no change, but when the 200v fail (like for last typhoon) alarm ring and all the blast doors close automatically in a somewhat noisy and dramatical fashion... it is quite impressive...

Neither is gas. Electric air conditioner heat and electric "infrared" heaters.

There's tons of stuff on the web about the comparative efficiencies of them, but generally the "electric stoves" heat a tiny little space immediately around the heater consuming 800w of power and only generating 800w of heat whereas the air conditioner can generate 3000w of heat from the same 800w.

Lots of arguing and comparisons about it on the web.

The Asahi says (Japanese) that, even with current conservation measures, demand will outstrip supply by some 20% during the summer peak hours from 1-3pm.

Conservation measures may have to be more drastic, taking in Tokyo's wards. Their current exemption is already thought to be unfair by many but there's little doubt that the government would be reluctant to include Minato, Chjyoda and Chuo wards (as others here have mentioned). There is talk of asking companies to stagger operating hours and holidays to create a smoother demand curve.

Hey Big Al, welcome back. They're scheduled to start Monday depending on your area. They had announced there would be none for this weekend..

Today I made good on my promise to myself and purchased a gasoline powered generator (4-stroke, so no fuel mixing). It's a small-ish 850VA model, but that's enough to power a few lights, charge batteries, and maybe even watch a bit of TV. So ... as long as I have gasoline I'm set! With that thought in mind I spent a couple hours searching for a gas can, with absolutely no luck. Gas is getting easier to buy, but you're SOL if you also want something other than a car to put it in. Ah well ... time will straighten that one out too I suppose.

The guy at the store put some gas in it so I could test it out though, which I did, and it works just fine.

A generator ... sheesh, I never thought I'd need or want one of those.

Buy a kerosene pump* (falsely claimed to be invented by Dr. NakaMats) and use it to syphon** your neighbors car into any old empty shochu bottle that's handy.

I can't wait to see the look on my neighbor's face when he sees his car stuffed inside a shochu bottle!

As spring proceeds and temperature raise the need for blackouts will diminish at least until mid June. After that watch out, because than the fun really begins when the summer heat hits.

Don't all new cars have a little cross inside the filling hole to prevent siphoning ?

BTW, yeah, no more gas tank available anywhere. But you sure for the oil part ? My Yamaha which is a "really-I-don't-have-a-clue"-strokes need oil in a secondary tank which is a "4 cycle engine oil". now it might just be the regular lubricant... But I would have prefered a diesel one... as this time i'm sure you can run them on filtered cooking oil... (maybe...)
