That is very reasonable.

Yes, but surely as they are the ones paying, less would still be less? Mrs. Yanpa's company provide her each month with the price of a 6-month pass divided by 6 to the nearest yen, the stingy bastards.

If they were a smart little company, wouldn't they have factored all those details into your salary when the employment agreement was initially written up ... or whatever?

Well I guess they know what they're doing... The agreement was "more salary than my previous job + usual benefits including transport", so it is a small but nevertheless additional benefit beyond what I was expecting, so it's not that I'm complaining or anything.

Part of the agreement for a work visa there is employer covers transportation expenses. (I don't think they can include that in your salary)

That being said, in reality, none of my travel expenses are paid...though I am not required to be at the office (I'm working from LA for the next 2 weeks)

Let me get this straight....Privatization of the subway system involved selling the national government-owned subway system to a national government ministry and a prefectural government?

No, the Tokyo subway system was always owned by Tokyo, and the other Tokyo subway system was always owned by Tokyo and Japan. The other Tokyo subway system was privatized and is now owned by Japan and Tokyo. Got that?

Got it! Phew, for a second there, I was thinking that they'd privatized the subway by selling it from one government to another government.

Korea of course is not to be outdone by the former imperial oppressor or anyone else for that matter.

Seoul Metro is a public corporation which runs the Seoul Subway Lines 1 to 4. From 1970 to 2006, it was called Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corporation.

Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation (SMRT) was established in 1994 to operate the Seoul Subway lines 5, 6, 7, 8 in Seoul, South Korea.

Seoul Subway Line 9, operated by Seoul Metro Line9 Corporation, is a subway line in Seoul. ... It is the first privately run subway line in Korea, operated by Veolia Transport, a France-based company. (which probably means it is permanently on strike)

Ownership of lines 10 - 19 is left as an exercise to the reader.

The company I work for does something similar for all employees: they pay transportation fees, but only the cheapest solution. And they pay this only twice per year. So if your transportation consists of a bus and a train (as in my case) you get twice a three month bus teikiken (longest teikiken which toei bus has) plus the cost of a six month JR teikiken (the longest JR has).

In my case is the JR teikiken a lot cheaper than paying the regular ticket price. With the six months teikiken I'm paying only 60% of the full fare price, based on 21 working/travelling days per month.
