and yes I do recognise that the manual labour version is also throughout the season every single year from now until Armageddon. It is just that I have seen many built-in snow melting apparatus used for the first two years until the reality of the operating budget becomes apparent. So many of these systems are sold on fraudulently optimistic operating cost estimates, and by the time that becomes apparent it is too late.

Fair enough but my backup plan involves my year-round waterfall flow, some hosing, and gravity

My old man told me he bought a sack of gritting salt a few of years ago and magically it has refused to snow enough each winter since for him to bother getting it out.

Not so sure it needs to go to the top but yes...and needs to be threaded so it can be capped off to prevent it clogging when not in use.

Black ice out there this morning. One very nasty little skid moment for me and lots of kids dumped off their bikes. Poor things - that shit hurts. I suppose chains/studs would help in that stuff but I don't think because there are patches of black ice it is sensible to fit them. And I don't want to get fined. Keep speed right down is about all you can do. Thankfully I was going slowly when I skidded so was able to recover it.

Nothing helps with black ice, not even medieval metal spikes protruding from soft tacky rubber.

Sometimes I wish that people would let those ideas about being able to conquer black ice just slide.

Thought as much. Just be wary, alert and keep speed your right down. Haven't had a lot of experience on ice but thanks to Australia and oil rigs I've had skid practice on mud and sand. More than I wanted really.

Ehm... metal spikes are for the ice and compacted snow... paddle like thread is for the loose snow. That's why you can also tie thick fabrick or paracord perpendicual to the tire rotation through the alloy holes.
That also allows this abomination to exist:
IMG_6422.JPG

The "mud and snow" capability... and notice that it don't extend to ice...

On expressway snow chains might be illegal because they have a speed limit of 40kph while minimum legal speed is 50kph.

As for the fines... not much said on the rulebook. But as long as tou have slush on the road the back and forth lliability issues would be interesting to follow in case of accident...
Dry road... sure... noone want to drive with chains on anyway... (well aside from few toddlers that i heard of)

EDIT: holy shit, I wrote this for shit and giggles without checking the math... but it's fucking spot on true... she's 1 year older than my mom... look younger though thanks to not being a crack whore/meth head combo...
