Regarding the Argentinians...I just visited my little chunk -o- forest and hooooreeeee shiiiiiit there is a ton of snow!! I was barely able to climb on to it since the snow plow"wake" on the side of the road was soo steep. I didn't fall through anywhere but there was easily 2 meters of snow in most places.

Sad but dude sounded like he needed serious mental help starting a a much much younger age...and hotel jump? When in Rome?

OK that is a little more than I expected for that place.

I'm a bit pushed for time at this very minute but some time we should speak about architectural techniques for dealling with a building in that environment. Do it wrong and spring thaw can and will pull your roof apart. Where possible you want it to be self resolving, not to have to climb up and clear snow every single damn day of the winter.

I can't feel too sorry for this bloke. He was 66 years old but stuck in that whole adolescent/early 20s narcissism that most of us leave behind. McTojo is a good example of that kind of person in their 30s. So Dennis was a writer? So are many of us but we're not going to kill ourselves because the world hasn't recognised us.

Yeah, yeah....Whenever I've looked at your posts (not that often, mind you) I've thought that you're as Japanese as witchetty grubs. Admittedly you're somewhat clever at trolling. But Japanese you are not.

Actually I was a bit unfair about comparing Mr Williams with McTojo though the narcissism is a shared quality. At least McTojo had the initiative to put some of his money into self publishing an onsen coffee table type book. I respect that

Wasn't this bad last year...and since I know where everything is now, it was quite freaky to literally be walking so high above everything.

Your advice on the best local methods for the roof AND how the hell to find any data on the frostline in the area would be greaatly appreciated. I've scaled back sooo much over the past year and will probably end up drilling and molding my own piers to build on rather than try to do a full foundation.

The suicides are another thing altogether - just saw on that website that a Japanese female hanged herself on a flight from Korea to Fukuoka. Lovely for the next person with a bursting bladder who went to empty it.

I haven't checked how many years old the post you quoted is, but I can see that the Ben Miller blog is new from 25 April last year. Perhaps it is another way to get your vanity domain: wait until the previous registrant carks it.

Edit: OK, I did bother to check: the post you quoted is almost 8 years ago. You either have a lot of time on your hands or a pretty morbid hobby to be clicking on those links. Even though the thread has by its nature continued I think we can call this a zombie revival of an old post.

I was actually originally looking for a video made by two prats from the UK who went up Mt Fuji in the off season when people aren't allowed to climb. They didn't die but the video was posted in that context.

Then I decided to read the thread from start to finish (haven't yet) and came across the different Ben Miller blog link and the interesting Japanese website that assists with repatriating the remains of Japanese who have died abroad. This thread is morbidly fascinating in one way and I am sure that's why it has so many views.

The J website has some grim fatal incidents - I mistakenly said the female was going from Korea to Fukuoka but that was to be later. She killed herself on a flight from Honolulu to Korea on Korean Airlines. It's a very helpful website but the English version is mildly amusing with clangers such as 'fetal' accidents.

I noted that this thread was started and continued some yrs back in a more lighthearted tone than some of the later posts. I think the earlier irreverent tone is fine and it gives an insight into the time when fucked gaijin was more against the grain.

Sure, that is fine, it is just that the post you revived seems to deal with a man someone still active here actually met in person, and it took me all of four clicks to go to the beginning of the blog archive and see that it began 7 years after the funeral.

Maybe I am a little more sensitive: I have some entries in the address book of my phone for dead people, that I can't bring myself to delete (and I will crap myself bigtime if I ever get a call from those numbers), but I would like to say that you will probably note a difference in tone between reports of stiffs nobody has ever met and those we have. If it were me, I would have done a little more digging before I revived a posting about a person who died 8 years ago, known to a poster here, asking if a link which appeared to be valid was for the same person. Put yourself in the other person's shoes, just for a moment.

I see your point but I think you've misinterpreted my initial post. I clicked on the link because my first time in Japan was some time ago and a few of the names on the Dead Gaijins thread ring a bell. When I saw the deceased bloke's name circa 2015 I was hoping he actually recovered and lived to blog.

I knew at least one of the people listed in this thread. Worked with the person so I knew them reasonably well. It didn't and doesn't matter what anybody here wrote. Death has always been portrayed at least in British/Irish culture as something that can be satirised and humour/flippancy surrounding the dead, whether we know them personally or not, is part of that.

The only comments in this thread that were genuinely on the edge were the ones about the two Germans who plunged from the Keio Hotel and even then they weren't much if a so-called relative of one of the blokes hadn't come out of the woodwork. Even then it turned out to be questionable that she was the sister.

Hope springs eternal.

When was the last time a dead bloke, with a funeral and all the trappings, recovered and lived to blog?

I don't believe the reports from Judea circa 30 AD either.

For the record, the reason why I felt this needed a comment was because of the tone of the original post: it was not a "look at this newsworthy way to go" but more a "this is a heads up, this guy died, I wish I had gone to his funeral" and I personally would have dug deeper before reviving an 8 year old post. You evidently get more or fewer kilometres per litre.

I find it weird how often this thread gets revived just as it seems to have died.

Having said that, comparing McTojo and that sad POS emotional blackmailer actually was a touch off. McTojo strikes me as really, really dumb and just a bit of a loser, but he's probably just a decent enough guy that can't quite figure out how to swim. The media blackmailer was obviously a full blown delusional psychotic. I despise people like that so much I am almost glad he capped himself in such a gruesome fashion. Fortunately for me, not quite.

Ah, I know who you're referring to now. Yes, I can't feel sympathetic to somebody who dragged strangers into his terminally psychotic world and who are probably still feeling like absolute shit over the last minute communications he sent them. Not to mention how his wife and others who knew him personally must feel. I suspect that was the objective - to make as many people as possible feel guilty.

I respect McTojo for having the gumption to arrange private printing of his coffee table onsen book - the fact is no matter how good a writer you are, these days you're going to have to self fund if you want publication for 99 percent of writers, some of whom are better than those published. If I liked hot spring bathing in Japan I'd buy McTojo's book but Japanese hot springs just are too hot and have an unpleasant effect on me.

Totally. What that freakoid did was evil, RIP or no. McTojo is just an Internet bore, and even then he has provided some pretty good comic relief over the years. It wasn't a bad little schtick back in 2004 even if it got tired fast.

Wisconsin Guardsman dies while deployed in Japan
A Wisconsin National Guard member died Sunday while deployed in Japan with the 115th Fighter Wing.

The airman, who was not identified, fell from a fifth-story window in Kadena, Japan, and was taken to U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa at Camp Foster. The airman was pronounced dead at 9:51 p.m. Japan time. The National Guard member's family was notified of the death Sunday afternoon.

About 250 airmen and a dozen F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft from the 115th Fighter Wing's 176th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron deployed to Okinawa in January to support a variety of operations in the Pacific Command Theater, including disaster relief, anti-piracy efforts and defense duties. The group, which is headquartered in Madison, is under the command of the Air Force's largest combat unit, the 18th Wing, during the deployment to Japan.

The airman's name is expected to be released on Monday. The incident is under investigation.

RIP Richie Benaud. Australia has lost a national treasure and everywhere that plays cricket has lost a truly towering and beloved figure. I still remember that last Ashes series and how he handled it. He will be much missed. Someone so smart, so fair and just so good that he was invited to commentating while he was still captain of one of the competing teams. There are very few like that and there are very few who were loved across so many countries and cultures playing what is a fiercely competitive national game.
