I just noticed this new sign next to the local fumikiri... not sure if it's a reaction to some recent personbodyaccident or part of a wider problem, but it's nice they provide the number of a hotline for English-speakers too... as long as you can read Japanese...

Don't know the real reason, but suspect it may have something to do with gullibility, anal sex and fashionability...

My guess is some over-puritanical and influential teacher of English (and/or textbook / dictionary creator) didn't want to expose Japanese learners of English to the horror of butt, bottom, ass etc., and somehow the translation became lodged in the hive mind.

Probably comes from taking measurements of clothes. The waist is the area above the belly button, and the hip is the area across the ass cheeks. Pic here
